About this project
spoonacular is a recipe search engine that understands natural language, so you get the results you really want. This means no more meat in your "vegetarian chili" or wheat flour in your "gluten-free brownies." Not only will spoonacular understand your query better than conventional recipe search engines, the results will be much more customizable. We will calculate scores for healthiness, price, difficulty, and popularity that will let you rank recipes according to what really matters to you. Top-scoring recipes will receive badges and other awards to set them apart from the rest.
Plus, you won't find ugly nutrition labels and boring ingredient lists on spoonacular-- we want recipe searching and browsing to be visually appealing. After all, you eat with your eyes first! We only feature recipes with photos, and use attractive widgets to provide important information. Recipes are given one to three dollar signs depending on how expensive the ingredients are. Our cost estimates can help you find an inexpensive recipe for when you have to feed a crowd or a special (yet admittedly expensive) anniversary dinner-- whatever you need. Recipes popular on social media platforms will have a dark pink heart, while less popular recipes will be just faintly pink. The clock tells you how long you will have to peel, chop, and cook until the food is on your table, while the spoonacular metascore combines all these factors into one single rating. As far as we're concerned, the very best recipes are inexpensive, popular, healthy, and easy to make.
Our little chef hopes to one day be the Siri of recipes. He is already a bit of a health nut, providing useful tips to make recipes even healthier (ever try replacing butter with a healthier oil or even mashed bananas when baking?)
Although we want spoonacular to become the web's best recipe search engine, we don't want to stop there. It is our vision to provide a free tool that allows other blogs and websites to convert their standard ingredient lists to visualized lists like the one below:
We also hope other blogs and websites will use our tool to calculate and display visually-appealing price and nutrition information. We also plan to develop an app that will let you score your own recipes right in your kitchen-- just enter the ingredients in your meal, take a picture, and let spoonacular do the rest. You have a digital alarm clock, Google calendar, and a Kindle, why depend on an old-fashioned recipe book?
We hope spoonacular will make the whole web a little bit tastier. Please pledge spooner than later! ;)
Some of Our Rewards:
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is to make sure our recipe search engine is truly superior to other engines already on the web. Luckily we have some pretty snazzy algorithms and lots of data from reliable sources around the web. We believe anyone using our engine will "taste" the difference ;) Otherwise this project is pretty low-risk-- we are determined to get spoonacular up and running as soon as possible. Your pledge will help us get there sooner, as we look to hire designers for our website and app, pay for image licenses, etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
