About this project
The Hog River Revival began over a year ago when artists Joe McCarthy and Peter Albano began the process of exploring and mapping Hartford's subterranean river system. There are 9 miles of enormous 30'x30' conduits which bring the north and south branches of the Park "Hog" River out to the Connecticut river. Along with these conduits there are miles of smaller tunnels the branch off from the river, running under Hartford like a spider web. The idea of creating "maps" based solely on our trips down the river was a way to approach a sprawling and enormous subject matter.
The voyages down the river gave way to the creation of mixed media work, dealing with the original Army Corps of Engineers blue prints The sketch book series was created to provide us an outlet to process the history, construction and function of the river system in a conceptual manner.
These mixed media works were exhibited at the Buttonwood Tree gallery in Middletown, as well as the Promenade Gallery within Hartford's Bushnell Theater.
The Hog River Revival was chosen as the final show by the Hartford Arts Council for the ArtWalk at the Hartford public library. We are honored that this once little project has grown so big, so fast.
We are here on Kickstarter to try and fund our hanging/framing costs for this show. Framing giant photographs is expensive.
Many people since the start of the project have asked to accompany us as we travel the river. It was not something we were able to consider until Rick Green from the Hartford Courant wrote about our project. He sent photographer Mark Mirko down with us, Mark's response was overwhelmingly positive, he said that it was "hands down one of the best assigments he had ever been on." And for us it was fun to share our wonder and adventure with others. So....
All of our backers at the $200 reward level will get to acompany us down the river.
we can tell you from experience that it will be high on the list of your best stories. Take a look at our other rewards and check out more photos on our web sites. Thank you for helping us bring light to this underground river.
