The Time is Now
We are living in a time where the recognition of our shared humanity is more important than ever before. White supremacy and capitalism are coming for all of us. We must begin to consider how our thoughts, words and actions impact the collective good. We must begin to work collectively and in solidarity with one another. We must skillfully take collective and radical action to create a world that allows all of us to breathe, be, live, be seen and validated.
A Way of Life
Skill in Action is more than a book, it’s a way of life. Living Skill in Action illustrates what it means to live yoga for the transformation and liberation of all beings. It asks yoga practitioners and social change agents to take the benefits and lessons that come from a contemplative practice and to use their power to influence in the world.
Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World will ask readers to explore the deeply transformational practice of yoga, and to become a social change agent to create a world that is just for all. The book explores liberation for everyone, while inviting readers to enact agency, whether that manifests as activism, volunteer work, or changing relationships with others and ourselves.
As you read, you’ll be able to clearly define power and privilege, oppression, liberation and suffering, and you will be asked to make changes in your life in order to create a world that allows all of us to be free. The end of each chapter includes a sample practice so that readers can put this wisdom into action in their daily lives. These sample practices include: breathwork, asana, meditation and interpersonal relational work. In an effort to move toward liberation for all, the practices extend beyond the individual to offer resources and tools to shift institutional policies and procedures in a culture that has left all of us negatively impacted by white supremacy.
It is my hope that Skill in Action calls you and your community to take action and to not become complicit via complacency. It asks that we take the powerful practice of yoga and use it to create a world that makes space for all, that values all and that speaks truth to power.
