Too much of any city is drab, gray concrete. Will you help us turn San Francisco's dark, damp, and slightly scary 16th Avenue steps into a vibrantly colorful Hidden Garden tile mosaic?
The design is by the same artists who transformed San Francisco's Moraga Street steps into the magnificent mosaic seen here. (That page says 16th Avenue steps but really it's on Moraga Street between 16th & 15th Avenues.)
A broader group of people is raising money for the Hidden Garden steps as a whole. This Kickstarter project is raising funds specifically to sponsor one element in the design -- the Diablo Fairy Lantern flower -- and to recognize the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) residents of the Sunset District who live near both sets of steps..
Why LGBTs? The Sunset has a reputation for being one of the city's most conservative, straight districts, but LGBT people have always lived here too. We want to give back to the community by supporting this gorgeous project, and we will place one tile near the Diablo Fairy Lantern with the name of our social group, Out in the Fog.
Why the Fairy Lantern? (I don't really have to explain that, do I?) Because it's beautiful. Here's what the Fairy Lantern looks like in the design, and here's what it looks like in real life. Like I said -- gorgeous.
If you are LGBT, or you have a friend or family member who is, or even if you've just felt sometimes like you don't really fit in with your surroundings, donate to the Diablo Fairy Lantern to let others who are like you know that even if they're in the minority, they are not alone.
The Hidden Garden steps will only get transformed into a thing of beauty if people raise funds for the design elements or sponsor individual tiles. Anything you donate will help us reach our goal. The first 20 people who pledge $150 or more can add their names or words to a tile. (See limits on lettering in the Rewards list.) You will not be charged unless we meet our funding goal. Any funds we raise beyond the goal for the Diablo Fairy Lantern will be donated to the Hidden Garden steps project to help meet its much larger overall funding target.
Thanks for any help you can provide, and please spread the word.
Walk in beauty. Be beautiful.
