About

“I use my Contacts skill to find a street doctor.”

“I call up my Hacker buddy.”

“What do you mean the werewolf is hunting us? I thought we were hunting the werewolf!”

“If I had realized he was a Mad Scientist, I would have tried to pay him to upgrade my weapons…”

So maybe you've heard something like this in your game, maybe you’ve even said something like this before. No matter… sometimes you need stats for a character like a doctor, hacker, werewolf, or even a mad scientist. If you do, then this is the resource book for you!

FATE Folio provide GM’s with a great resource for Adversaries and some Extras to add to their FATE Games. I am not saying it is the best resource, but its definitely somewhere between good and awesome. At least with these characters in hand, you can whip out a “sketchy doctor who has lost his license” or a “heart throb post-apocalyptic bounty hunter”, you can even use a “dragon summoning martial artist” to kick some whiny player character butt.

You see where I am going with this right…

So What’s in this Book?

This is a 32+ page book  in black & white (let’s just call it gray scale…). Inside you will find a wide variety of potential adversaries, usually with a bit of quirkiness to make them memorable. I plan on sprinkling in several Fate Extras to help round out the characters or for Player/GM use.

Of course the characters will have the usual stuff, but I plan on providing at least a couple of versions of the character, one more powerful than the other… just because player characters should cry at least one time during a campaign. GMs know that the Players will already be complaining, so we might as well have a bit of fun in the process.

Here is the working draft of the cover… (I will probably put full color characters on the cover)

Working Cover
Working Cover

So here are the adversaries that you get so far in FATE Folio I (yes I plan on more, see below):

  • Barbarian
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Doctor
  • Gun Fu Operative
  • Hacker
  • Knight
  • Mad Scientist
  • Martial Artist
  • Pirate Captain
  • Robot
  • Skeletal Warrior
  • Werewolf
  • 6 Extras… possibly more because more of them fit on a page

The Book

  • 5.5" x 8.5" on pretty good quality paper with a color cover
  • A PDF is included with print version (though the PDF can be purchased by itself)
  • Artwork for each character. The artwork may not be your cup of tea, but so what… I like the artist’s style and asked him do up some characters for me, and I like what he did, and he was pretty cool about doing more when I needed it, and there is more detail in the images that you realize, plus I got them in color and you will only see them in gray scale unless I give them out as a stretch goal as part of downloadable character sheets, and that about sums up the artwork and a piece of my life story.

Powered By Fate

For those of you who don’t play FATE… (wtf), you can always get the book any way and cross the FATE info and put your favorite system in. I won’t see you do it, so there is a good chance I won’t care.

But for those that play FATE, then you know what is up when you see the sections on Aspects, Skill, Stunts, & Stress. You know when you see an adversary with the skill “Kick Ass Martial Arts +7”, you should really re-consider your options. I am not saying that is what the Martial Artist has, but you know what up if you do see it.

Stretch Goals

So, this is hard one when figuring out how do this stuff in a way that I would like it done, if it was me buying this book. Here is what I have for Fate Folio I:

  • $500 - FUNDED! + Full Color Images + More Pages!
  • $1,000: +2 Characters and +1 Extra (that is +4 pages added to the book)
  • $1,500: +2 Characters and +1 Extra + Downloadable Character Sheets For Each Adversary (that is +4 pages added to the book , for a total of 40+ pages)
  • $2,000: Monster Folio I – this is a 28pg PDF that will give you 12 Monsters and 3 Lairs (if we start getting close to this goal, I will post the monster list in an update)
  • $2,500: +2 Monsters and +1 Lair added to Monster Folio I (+4 pages of content)
  • $3,000: +2 Monsters and +1 Lair added to Monster Folio I (+4 pages of content)

Is there a Monster Folio 2? Yes! Is there a FATE Folio II? Yes! Is there a book with a bunch of left over characters, monsters, extras, & lairs? Yes! If FATE happens and there is enough demand, there will be more stretch goals…

Pledge Levels

Here the rewards tiers

  •  Digital Folio – at this level you will get a digital copy of FATE Folio I, and any digital stretch goals
  •  Folio Fiend – at this level you will get a physical copy of FATE Folio I, and digital copy of the same book, and any digital stretch goals.

Will there be print copies of Monster Folio I & II, FATE Folio II, and Cutting Room Floor Folio? I will most likely will do this as part of a BackerKit if we get enough interest (meaning $$$ to get those stretch goals). Otherwise, I may run another kickstarter to get those folios into print.

I plan on several more FATE Folios, unless I end up with a big fat goose egg, and no one want a bunch of adversarial NPCs in a cool Folio format for their FATE games… if that happens, I go back to flipping boogers (I mean burgers).

Who am I?

No one of any consequence. Had a calling of being a professional GM, but opted for the non-paid type. I basically had this crazy idea because of some artwork I saw (see artwork section above). Thought I would see if anyone else liked the idea… Kickstarter meet FATE Folio.

Other than that, I am pretty good at desktop publishing, and have some experience in designing new game systems and memorable characters for campaigns (I can hear my players groaning). Much of the book is actually laid out, just waiting to finish up the skills/stunts for the characters and see what else I need to add.

So who am I? I am actually pretty excited to see this FATE Folio thing come to print (and PDF).

Delivery

By the way, delivery will be through DriveThruRPG. Just saying they make things pretty easy and cost effective… so there. Also, shipping costs for physical copies will be handled by BackerKit at the end of the kickstarter.

Risks and challenges

Usual risks if I don't complete this project. I have all the images, and just need to be imbued with a sense of a pending deadline to create and finish off the character info for game play.

Delivery of PDF and physical books will be via DriveThruRPG so that should have very little risks... I have printed a number of books and cards from this company, so I know how they like to see their layouts and covers...
