A day in the life of a girl whose parents have recently divorced. A dispute over money, an abortive date, and soft serve ice cream.
Dear Family, Friends, Friends-of-Friends, and Generous Strangers,
Hello! Thanks for watching our video and learning about our first short movie. “While You Were at School” is about a seventeen-year old girl on the Upper East Side. Her name is Liv. Her house is beautiful. Her parents are divorced. At the beginning of the film, Liv's mom is preparing to go out on a date. At the last minute, she remembers to ask Liv to bring some passport renewal forms to her dad, who is meant to sign them. He refuses, and Liv spends the rest of
the night shuttling between her parents, who both refuse to sign. Instead, they try to make each other unhappy.
Haley wrote the script, with help from Edo, and the movie was co-directed by the two of us. The story is semi-autobiographical (Haley has divorced parents). Perhaps more importantly, however, the setting – New York, and growing up in New York – is dear and familiar to both of us.
We wrapped principal photography on the 7th of October, and have just started post-production. We’d like to be able to work in movies and television for the rest of our lives. And hopefully, making this short film will help us to do so. Any time we apply for a job in the industry or seek support for a future project, we'll be able to send this movie along as part of our portfolio. To this end, we plan to submit this short to as many film festivals as possible, including Lincoln Center’s New Directors New Films, Tribeca Film Festival, South by Southwest, etc.
As we begin post-production, your money will help us pay back our wonderful crew. It will also enable us to pay for audio mixing and color correction, both of which will be essential if we want our movie to look (and sound) professional, clean, and beautiful. The math suggests that just 20 people donating even $100 would fulfill our budget.
Again, thank you. We hope you are well.

When you make a movie, there’s always a big chance that it will be terrible. Especially when the two directors have never made a film before. However, to counter our own inexperience, we've assembled an experienced – and very talented – crew. Our producer, Busi Mhlongo, is a lead researcher and production coordinator for "The UneXplained", a hit show on the Bio Channel. Our editor, Kelly Simpson, a senior at NYU Film School, already edits professionally for "The UneXplained". And our cinematographer is the brilliant Fletcher Wolfe – she’s sent two shorts to Sundance and she really knows what she’s doing.
Okay. So, we’ve never done this before. Busi, Kelly, Fletcher, and all the other members of our fantastic crew, have. We think they have helped make the movie a whole lot better!
