What is this film about and why do we need funding?
THE NEW FIRE is an independent documentary about next-generation nuclear technology and the role it could play in fighting climate change. It’s a grassroots effort, that’s been funded entirely through the generosity of visionary individuals and family foundations.
We need $40,000 for motion graphics and title design. Filming is finished, editing is nearly complete and now we’re ready to add the graphics that will bring important concepts to life, raise production values and unify the look and feel of the film.
Fortunately, a committed donor has offered a $20,000 matching grant, pledging to double every dollar donated up to our goal. This enables you to double the impact of your contribution!

What inspired THE NEW FIRE?
Today, there are more than 40 companies working to commercialize next-generation nuclear technologies. Award-winning director, David Schumacher, wanted to chronicle the stories of young entrepreneurs and engineers who are developing potentially revolutionary "Generation IV" reactors. Could these audacious innovators be the agents of change the world has been waiting for? Two years ago, David and his crew set out to find the answer.
Who, What and Where did we film?
Production for THE NEW FIRE consisted of 90 days of shooting on 4 continents, resulting in over 300 hours of original footage. We've filmed extensively inside nuclear startups including Oklo, Terrapower and Transatomic, as well as in a number of university and government laboratories at the forefront of nuclear innovation.
We filmed in three countries with climate scientist James Hansen and interviewed dozens of experts including Jeffrey Sachs, William Magwood, Armond Cohen, Mark Peters, Ken Caldeira, Kerry Emanuel, Ted Nordhaus, Tom Wigley and many more.
The crew traveled to China and Senegal to see examples of places where the world's energy consumption is expected to grow. We learned about the fundamental benefits energy can bring to those who don't have it, as well as the challenges of producing that needed energy cleanly,reliably and economically.
In France, we witnessed the historic COP21 Paris climate conference and also visited a variety of French nuclear sites including a government nuclear research laboratory and a spent fuel reprocessing facility.
Why is this film important?
Since An Inconvenient Truth, many documentaries have shown us the causes and effects of climate change. But focusing only on overwhelming environmental issues can feel paralyzing. THE NEW FIRE looks at the problems but its focus is on solutions, especially advanced 'Generation IV' nuclear reactors and the role they could play in fighting climate change.
THE NEW FIRE is a story of hope and optimism, of hard work and heroism. It’s an affirmation of what youth and audacity can achieve in the face of impossible odds. Above all, it’s a story that needs to be told now, before it's too late.
Where are we now and why do we need funding?
Since we began filming in January 2015, making this film has been an independent, grassroots effort. 90 days of principal photography were logged across the United States as well as the United Kingdom, France, Senegal and China. The resulting 300 hours of footage provided abundant raw material that’s both comprehensive and global in scope.
Post-production began in January 2016 and editing is nearly complete. Now, we're at the stage where we're ready to begin work on motion graphics and title design.
Motion graphics and title design are critical parts of the project and will increase the film's visual impact, giving clarity to otherwise difficult concepts and bringing them to life. Simply put, high-quality graphics can be the difference between a good film and a great one. There's just one catch: they're expensive. That's why we need you to support this project!

Who's on the Team?
DAVID SCHUMACHER - Director & Producer
David Schumacher earned a 2010 New York Emmy Award and two 2010 New York Emmy nominations for his work creating, producing and directing the TV series, NYCMusicShow. David has produced branding and identity campaigns for television networks including Oxygen, WE tv and CBS College Sports. He has made documentary, educational and promotional films for clients including Columbia University, The World Economic Forum, New York University, The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and The New School.
ADAM ZUCKER - Editor
Adam Zucker is an award-winning documentary editor and filmmaker. He has edited dozens of feature documentaries, including American Hollow (Sundance Film Festival, HBO), Death By Design (Sheffield Doc/Fest), Show Business, Gotta Dance (Tribeca Film Festival and Showtime), Broadway: The American Musical, Richard Wright: Black Boy (BBC) and The West (PBS). Adam is the producer/director of The Return, currently on the international film circuit, and Greensboro: Closer to the Truth, which screened globally, and received the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Rome International Film Festival.
DEREK WIESEHAHN - Director of Photography & Co-Producer
Derek Wiesehahn's recent cinematography credits include the 2010 Academy Award-winning documentary short, Music By Prudence, the 2013 Academy Award-nominated documentary, How To Survive A Plague and the 2014 Oscar shortlisted documentary, God Loves Uganda. Derek’s camera operating credits include the 2011 Sundance winner, and Academy Award-nominated documentary, Restrepo, and its follow-up, Korengal. Most recently, Derek was director of photography for Newtown, which premiered at Sundance 2016 to broad critical acclaim.
WENDY PEREZ - Associate Producer
Wendy Perez is an expert in executing engagement campaigns for brands and networks. As an account supervisor at PR Firms Devries and Edelman, Wendy provided strategic counsel to clients and developed and executed consumer engagement campaigns that authentically, transparently and creatively connected with their audience. Prior to joining Edelman, Wendy served as the partnerships & public affairs manager at Viacom International Media Networks. Wendy graduated from Barnard College with a BA in Urban Studies and a double minor in Environmental Science and Economics.
Risks and challenges
With any film project, there are always risks and challenges. Fortunately, we're nearing the end of this project, so the period of greatest risk is behind us.
There's urgency with this film. We want it to premiere as soon as possible at a major film festival. We have pegged March 2017 as an arbitrary premiere date, but the actual premiere date could be sooner or later. We'll keep you posted!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
