After a year of heartache and sorrow, Miguel journeys to the Camino de Santiago in search of healing, hope and another chance at love.
First, I must say thank you to all who have supported and believed in me on this journey because I feel every story should begin with gratitude.

I’m Juan Carlos Hernández, a writer, journalist and English instructor based in Chicago.
Plagued with despair after losing the love of his life, Miguel decides that his heart and signs are pointing him to Spain. He’s studying abroad in Prague, but he packs up early and takes off for one final trip before returning home – a pilgrimage to the city of Santiago de Compostela. He lands in Madrid without much of a plan except for walking 500 miles along the ancient trail of searching and spirituality.
Along the way he meets Luis, a passionate, comical mentor, many messengers, and searchers from across the world. He also meets Anna, a Brazilian who is also looking to remake her life. As they a walk across fields of flowers and Medieval towns, they help each other, and start falling for each other, but they’re unsure about stepping into a relationship as their hearts still churn with the questions that drove them to the path.
Humorous, lighthearted, reflective, touching, and lyrical, the narrative will pull you into a tapestry that is history guide, travelogue and love story.
The manuscript is solid after going through several revisions, as I recently finished the 8th draft. Yes, an 8th painstaking draft, but it has come into focus with every review. I'm now raising money to publish the book independently. That means hiring and working with the right editors, translators and designers to produce a great book. You can read a sample here.
Where the Funds Will Go
Quality takes time and because we will not receive the funds until May, we cannot begin editing, and translating until then and through the summer. After that, it goes to the designers and the printer at some point in November. With traditional publishing, this process could take from 18-24 months. The costs listed below are estimates based on recent research.
Please note, all backers will receive their rewards long before the official launch, which will be in late autumn 2013 or early spring 2014.
Editing and proofreading $500
- Hire a professional editor.
- Minor developmental editing, as well as line and copyediting
Spanish translation $2,000
- Many friends and relatives have requested a Spanish version of the novel, so one of my aims of this campaign is to hire a translator.
- This will require separate proofreaders and editors.
- This is also one of the reasons why this post production process will take several months.
Design and layout $700
- Hire an illustrator for the cover design
- Hire a designer for the layout of the book
Additional rewards $800
- Design and printing of coffee table books, thank you cards and bookmarks
- Allows printing in bulk to bring down the per-book costs
- Obtain ISBN numbers, pay registration fees, and other costs associated with getting listed in various online bookstores
- Purchase envelopes, packing materials, postage
- Obtain extra review copies
Launch Party: $2,000
- This party will be in the autumn 2013 or in the spring of 2014. There will be music, gifts, food and drinks. It will be a blast.
- If we surpass the goal, you give me the freedom to distribute the book more widely.

Your support is crucial to making Lost and Found a success! Let's surpass the goal and make the novel more widely available! As the stack of notebooks and printed manuscripts show below, this has been many years in the making and I hope to soon share this with many people. I could not have done it alone.

To my parents and brother and to my sister, her husband and their wonderful daughters. To my family in México and all those who have scattered north.
To my friends Mario and Rocío for their generosity. To Ana Castillo for hosting me in her home and helping this novel grow. To Robert Medina for showing us that little corner of the world. To Samuel Dubois, Melissa Bell, Keith Collett and others for their writing advice. To Dr. Marwan Amarin who made it possible for me to get away to work on this novel. To El Paso, Texas and the desert that surrounds her.
To my neighbors, the García family, for their support and belief in my work.
To all my friends, especially the México fans. You're in the novel. To my former colleagues and friends from the City Colleges of Chicago. And to Dr. Inma Minoves-Myers who watered this seed. May you rest in peace. You will always be in my heart. Gracias Maestra.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Thankfully there are very few risks and challenges in this particular project. The most difficult obstacles have already been crossed. Major editing has been completed, and the manuscript has been registered at the U.S. Copyright Office. It has gone through several readers, and the novel requires no major changes. Editing will be minor and will mostly look for superficial issues. I have already met with an editorial team who will take on this project.
I placed fulfilling the rewards in November because the 60-day funding period ends in mid April, and because after that Kickstarter requires a 14-day period before they release the funds. That means I will not receive any funding until the end of April or early May. We will work over the summer and early fall.
The funding is necessary to pay the editors, translators and designers who then need time to accomplish their tasks. By November, all materials will be sent to press. The e-book will be the first reward available, but I want to fulfill all rewards at the same time.
As for printing and design, these will be done locally (in the Chicago area) in order to keep communication smooth and printing time to a minimum. It might be more expensive to do it this way, but it ensures that the bookmark, the cards, the books and the coffee table book arrive promptly.
I am willing to travel for the workshops, but that depends on scheduling issues and travel costs. If it is more convenient to do it over the Internet for all the parties involved, that can be done as well. I have seven years of teaching experience, and great material to work with, so this will be an enjoyable reward to fulfill. I look forward to it.
