It’s been 175 years since Belle Grove, a thriving Shenandoah Valley grain plantation, operated its successful whiskey distillery. Now Belle Grove is creating a new Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey. When Belle Grove was a center of society and the largest plantation in the Shenandoah Valley in 1797, making strong spirits from local grain crops was a widespread and accepted source of income. Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey is a modern extension of this legacy, based upon the same Virginia grains and recipe used two centuries ago.
As appealing as a new whiskey can be, we are now creating a sweet alternative: Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey Chocolates. Handcrafted in Virginia, these delicious treats are made using pure Belgian chocolate with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. By combining the finest quality chocolate with the distinctive taste of Virginia whiskey we hope to establish a new regional specialty that can be enjoyed far and wide.
This project relies on local Virginians with special skills. From the certified chocolatiers in Harrisonburg, to the small distillery in Sperryville, and our talented designer in Reston, this is truly a Virginia production. Your support lets us complete this project and make sure it lasts! You will fund our boxes, printing, inserts, inventory and design costs. It will also enable us to set up a system for offering our custom whiskey chocolates far beyond our Shenandoah Valley. We think this is the strength of the Kickstarter community, to launch new and thoughtful projects into a much larger world.
Of course we want all supporters to taste Belle Grove's new chocolate truffles, at nearly every reward level. We will ship to anywhere within the US, and the cost is included in each reward level. Our Kickstarter schedule is set for shipping in January so you can be assured of having your beautiful whiskey chocolates before Valentine's Day!
The highest reward level includes a personal, behind-the-scenes tour of the Belle Grove Plantation for you and five others. We will contact you for scheduling an ideal time for your visit to Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley and to our extraordinary National and Virginia Historic Landmark Site.
Starting with the two-piece truffle reward, each package is divided equally between milk chocolate and dark chocolate varieties.
Which is better? After exhaustive sampling, surveying, and research we have determined that everyone prefers the milk chocolate truffles, except, of course, all those who prefer the dark chocolate. Given this conclusive evidence, we kept the split at half and half. Each interplays differently with our Virginia whiskey and both are distinctive and wonderful.
With Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey Chocolates, we will create a new taste of Virginia. We thank you for making it possible.
Risks and challenges
This summer we created a test batch of 50 boxes. We sold half, we gave away a fourth, and the last fourth... well, they were definitely popular. Our test proved that the whiskey chocolates were wonderful, the design was promising, and our inventory tracking still needed work. At this point, we feel good about our system from the chocolates to the packaging. While there is always some element of risk, we have enough experience now to feel good about our ability to deliver to our Kickstarter backers.
We thank you for your support and believe you will be pleased to brag to your friends (a little) that you helped kickstart the Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey Chocolates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
