Wow! Thank you to everyone who has backed this project and allowed us to hit our original goal of £15,000. I am eternally grateful. However, we still have time to raise more funds and are looking to build towards a total of £40k for our stretch goal.
Although we're keeping this project as lean as possible, there are inevitable production expenses including equipment rental, labour costs, travel expenses and hard drives. Not to forget film clip archive and usage costs.
As we've now begun attaching some great names to our documentary including Richard Donner, Cynthia Rothrock, Sam Firstenberg, Eric Roberts, Al Leong, Bill Duke, William Sadler, Peter McDonald, David Worth and many more. As our contributors are spread out across the US, this requires extra travelling in order to get as many great interviews as possible.
Also, we'd love to be able to invest in marketing materials for film festivals so as many people will see the film as possible.
Once again, thanks for all your support so far and be sure to spread the word to all your action movie-loving friends!
Get to the choppa!
"In Search of the Last Action Heroes" will explore the story behind the ‘80s action movie genre, examining how studios were able to turn outrageous concepts into genre-defining tropes, and how the one-man-army sub-genre produced the superstars of the era.
Matrix, Rambo, McClane, Ripley, Connor, Dutch - the power of their stories excited and inspired a generation of action enthusiasts.
Join popular YouTuber and ‘80s/’90s cinema expert Oliver Harper (Oliver Harper’s Retrospectives) as he takes us back in time for the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at the most testosterone-fuelled era in cinema.
Locked and loaded with nostalgia, ‘80s synth music, exclusive interviews, and visits to iconic filming locations, In Search of the Last Action Heroes will be the most comprehensive retrospective of the action film genre that defined our childhood.
Oliver will explore the stories behind the genre, speaking to the actors, writers, directors, producers and composers who helped influence and shape the films we grew up with.
Together, we’ll explore what made these films a success, how they evolved through the ‘90s, and what caused their eventual decline, as well as looking ahead to the current ‘80s revival that has brought us popular projects such as Stranger Things and Ready Player One.
We love this genre – the characters, the stories, and the personalities behind them. They deserve our best efforts to create something truly special, and so do you, our audience.
We want to help those born in the ‘80s and ‘90s to rediscover some the magic that made these films so iconic, as well as feed the imaginations of the new generation of fans who are now discovering the movies their parents love.
For many of us, these films represented our first strange taste of adulthood, a window into a new world that our parents didn’t think we were quite ready for yet.
Often these first glimpses were taken after sneaking into a movie theatre to see the latest release or creeping downstairs late at night to watch our favourite action hero (volume turned down low to avoid drawing the attention of disapproving parents).
We’ve all got our stories – our favourite characters, scenes, and films and how we first saw them – but behind the memories of questionable hairstyles, bulging muscles, and seemingly endless body counts, there are the more personal stories of the stars, directors, producers, writers and locations, and together they form the story of a genre that shaped a generation.
We want to delve deeper into this era – what was it like to be part of it? What made it so special? And how much of this world still exists?
We want to tell this story – but we’re going to need your help.
YouTuber Oliver Harper discussing the documentary live on stage at MCM Comic Con in London, May 27th, 2018
With nearly 200 retrospectives, 160 commentaries, and an engaged fanbase approaching 100,000 subscribers, Oliver has established himself as the leading authority for retrospective content on ‘80s and ‘90s films.
This film is his most ambitious project to date, expanding beyond the format of YouTube to deliver a more thorough and complete project.
In Search of the Last Action Heroes will take a broad look at the ‘80s action movie genre to tell the complete story of its rise, decline, and resurgence.
Sections we’re aiming to include are:
- Actors & Actresses
- Writers & Artists
- Production & Post-Production
- Box Office Release & Reception
- Stunts Toys & Videogames
After self-funding his hundreds of retrospectives and commentaries, Oliver is an expert at wringing every last drop of value from each pound. However, even he has his limits. A project of this scope requires funding to do it justice - and that’s where you come in (we hope!)
Your contributions towards our £15,000 goal will go towards the costs of production, filming interviews, kit, Kickstarter fees, post-production and marketing necessary to deliver a high-quality documentary.
This time, Oliver isn’t going alone. In the finest tradition of Predator and Aliens, Oliver has put together a crack team to assist him: a group of experienced filmmakers who share his passion for the days of unlimited ammo and hordes of nameless henchman.
Will our team emerge victorious? Or will they be taken out amidst a flurry of debris and blood squibs? Your actions will make the difference.
We’d love for you to get on board by investing in our project, but even if you can’t help us with funding we still need your help! Although investment is critical, we also want to engage with the community as much as possible.
By spreading the word on social media, you can help us reach more fans & increase interest in our project. The more excitement there is about this project the easier it will be for us to get access to the personalities and locations we want to include.
In addition to giving our backers the chance to purchase discs of the finished documentary and exclusive merch, we are also offering several other exciting rewards:

If you've made it this far down the page you probably think this is a cool project - we agree! We're creating this documentary for fans like you, but we also need your help. We've got a solid core team in place already but we're always looking to include other passionate members of the community. If you've a talent for production or design and would like to help, we'd like to hear from you!

Risks and challenges
As with any documentary, there are risks and challenges that may arise over the course of the production of this film. Once we've got over the hurdle of funding the project we'll be working hard to complete the filming within our deadline.
Although it's possible there may be unforeseen delays, we believe Oliver's experience of filming Oliver Harper's Retrospectives & Reviews and the rest of the teams' combined production experience will be equal to any problem.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
