Everyone has a story.
This is mine.
At 19 yrs old, with no prior convictions or criminal history to speak
of, I was sentenced to 4.5 years in the Arizona Department of
Corrections. I served 4 years in prison and completed 8 months of Supervised Release. I had no priors and no convictions since.
It's been a struggle, but now, at 29 yrs old and despite the label of EX-CON forever dangling over my head, I'm starting to put my life together and want to help others do the same.
Part cautionary tail, part social commentary , all TRUTH.
With this project, I'd like to share this experience with anyone who finds value in it. But, more importantly, I'd like to share my story with the young people in this country who are in or have found themselves in the same situation as myself. My hope is, they too can find their way, rise above the "ex-con" label and shatter even their own misconceptions of what's possible after a conviction.
The book will be very direct and to the point. Short in it's pages, but hopefully deeply meaningful for those who have or who are, facing the same situation.
With the funds raised, I will move forward with the writing process, as well as finance the first print run of the book. I'd like to keep the costs to produce the book extremely low, in order to produce/distribute as many copies as I can for free to people who are soon to be released, or have been recently released. This means having the book printed on the cheapest materials possible and limiting all drawings, art and pictures to black and white imagery only.
The proceeds of the book sales will be used to fund other "empowerment" projects, such as creating a website for ex-offenders. I envision a place where ex-offenders can get encouragement, tips/advice, post personal achievements and find a sense of purpose, by helping others.
Nobody's perfect and we all make mistakes. (Some of us just make BIGGER mistakes than others)
It's not the mistakes we make, as we navigate through life that determines our character, but, the way in which we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and once again face our adversities head on.
What do I need from you?
It's plain and simple...with your backing, you'll help me, help others.
