~ Drs. Kevin and Ashley Turner
Who am I?
My name is Dr. Ashley Turner and I am a Board Certified Doctor of Holistic Health (BCDHH) and traditionally-trained naturopath. I am an author, homesteader, and homeschooling mother of three sweet daughters. In addition to helping clients achieve their health goals through functional medicine, I teach classes on natural health and traditional food and am a contributor to the Weston A Price Foundation’s quarterly journal, Wise Traditions in Food, Farming, and the Healing Arts. I am married to Dr. Kevin Turner, a chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner, who owns Restorative Chiropractic and Functional Wellness Center.
My interest and training in holistic health emerged from our family's deep health trials. While my life-long chronic symptoms were dismissed by my doctors, it wasn't until the health of one of our daughters plummeted that Kevin and I sought answers beyond what we could find in conventional healthcare. One of our daughters struggled with severe gastrointestinal distress, eczema, and significant ASD symptoms and sensory disorders. My own chronic symptoms of eczema, IBS, hormone imbalances, acne, adrenal fatigue, depression, and anxiety worsened. Through functional lab tests for my daughter and I, we found nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut, chronic Lyme disease, mold and biotoxin related illness, and autoimmunity.
I share these pieces of our health journey to show that our family has been through the trenches of chronic illness. Maybe you are in those trenches today. This book stems from my desire to share our triumphs in the face of great trial. Beauty from ashes, so to speak. My heartfelt hope and prayer is that the wisdom found within the pages of this book would be hope-filled and life-giving for you. It is a gift to share the fruit of our family’s healing journey with you through this book. May it do for you what it has done for us; take joy in the journey!
What is in the book?
This book is a culmination of our family's healing journey. Quite honestly, many of the recipes and cooking techniques have been a part of the rhythm of our kitchen for over a decade.
The book is a cookbook and lifestyle guide for helping those with chronic illness, leaky gut, or autoimmune diseases. While the book is written for those struggling with chronic illness, it is also for anyone who desires to pursue vibrant wellness. The elimination diet removes foods that are known to drive inflammation and symptoms as well as a careful reintroduction period to rule out food reactions. This plan is designed to remove potentially problematic foods in order to decrease inflammation in the body, rebalance the gut flora, soothe the gut lining, regulate blood sugar, modulate the immune system, resolve nutrient deficiencies, and bring overall healing to the body.
Within the pages of Restorative Kitchen you will find gorgeous photography and easy to follow recipes and lifestyle recommendations. I share details about our family's health journey, discuss the current state of health in our country, and paint the picture for why we need a book like this. Easy to follow food lists for foods to enjoy and avoid are provided along with suggestions on how to stock a pantry for healing with nutrient-dense, responsibly sourced, real food options.
There are over 135 recipes with high-quality, full-color photographs and detailed instructions to help you succeed in this season of healing and restoration. The sections include:
- Cultured & probiotic foods
- Basic cooking techniques for the elimination diet
- Snacks & appetizers
- Main Dishes
Diet is foundational to overall health, but various other lifestyle factors have the power to significantly impact the body’s physiology as well. All three aspects of health — physical health, emotional health, and spiritual health — must be cultivated throughout the healing journey. That is why I have included a significant portion of the book to discuss lifestyle shifts and DIY therapies to aid in achieving true wellness. Topics discussed include:
- Sleep hygiene
- Stress management
- Reducing the toxic load
- Numerous recipes for non-toxic home and personal care products
- Techniques for healing therapies to do at home
The fact is, we as a society are getting sicker and more unhealthy every day. One in two Americans have a chronic illness and one in four have more than one chronic illness - and millions more are struggling with autoimmune diseases that simply have not been diagnosed yet. A huge market is eager for a book like this.
I'm part of that market. And I wanted to create the kind of book that I would have wanted to read when we were walking through the height of our health challenges - the kind of book you need - so to do that we've decided to publish Restorative Kitchen on our own. However, to self publish means that we have taken on significant expenses. We intend to use the money raised on Kickstarter to fund part of our first print run of books.
I wrote this book for everyone who wants to heal, recover, and enjoy life, and to answer the volumes of questions we get about cooking, reducing your toxic load, cleaning up lifestyle choices, and at home healing therapies.
But, this project won't succeed without your participation.
How can I get a book?
We want to have Restorative Kitchen in your hands by late spring 2019, and the best way you can make that happen is to pre-order your copy of the book now or support us through one of the other rewards.
You can also help us by sharing the link to this campaign to anyone and everyone you think might be interested in owning a copy of Restorative Kitchen - the more people who know about this project, the better!
- As with all Kickstarter projects, it is all or nothing. Funds are only given if we fulfill our entire fundraising goal. If this project speaks to you, please share, contribute, and help us reach our goal to give the gift of health!
Risks and challenges
Every project has its risks, but we are happy to tell you that the majority of the work on this book is already done: the photography is complete and the recipes have been written. The design and page layout is currently under way. We'll still need to do final edits but the bulk of what remains is getting the book polished, actually printed, and distributed to you.
There are always possibilities of delays with printing, but we are working to have Restorative Kitchen printed and distributed by June 2019. Once we hand over the book's electronic files to the printer hopefully by February 2019, we will have time to adjust to unforeseen delays and still get the book out by the end of spring.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
