WHAT'S MY PROJECT?
I'm making a book! A 200 page, perfect-bound soft cover volume of photography: portraits, nudes, still-lifes, and studio documentation. It's going to be a volume that documents my year-long residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem (10/2010 - 9/2011). It's an ambitious project! After working in self-publishing zines and small print projects, I'm pushing myself to make something HUGE. I am almost 2/3rd through the program and will continue making work through September, and after that will finalize the edit in the Fall. This funding will make possible the production design, editing, and publication of this work to debut in Spring 2012.
WHY AM I MAKING THIS BOOK?
I decided to make this book STUDIO WORK after I began to accumulate enormous amounts of work in the studio, of which only a tiny amount I could fit into an exhibition. A book would be able to capture a more complete experience of these portraits developing over the year.
MY ARTIST STATEMENT:
I make portraits, snapshots and text-based works mainly in photography, about the pleasures and burdens of portraiture. The portraits are of the people in my life and my projects focus on the roles the camera, the act of portrait making, and the resulting image/objects play in the understanding of and construction of friendship, sex, and intimacy. The portrait does not claim an objective record of those involved, as they are by nature tied to my own desires and concerns. I use repetition and simple formal elements to set up a visual language to open the possibilities of reading the work over time.
All of the images in STUDIO WORK are made in and inhabit the studio space for this year. They pile up, intermingle, are arranged and re-arranged, re-photographed, covered and un-covered.
In short, how does the accumulated experience in the studio influence me as an artist and work that is continually made there? Each portrait or still lifeis constructed amidst the unfinished editing process of those works that preceded it, and in reference to those other images that surround us.

HOW THIS FUNDING HELPS?
Here are the project expenses:
$13,500 Printer's fees for producing 750 books.
$2,000 Proofs and press checks with the printer
$2,000 Design consultant and production manager fees
$2,500 Distribution, shipping and project promotion!
RAISING THE GOAL TO $28,000
I’d like to share the possibilities of growing this beyond the minimum goal. You see, 20K is the minimum to getting the book printed, covering press and proofing fees, a minimal fee to the production manager, and a little bit of distribution. Raising the stakes to $28000, here’s what we can do with support above and beyond the minimum:
- $800 of this will cover fair pay for intern assistance in administrative, shipping, and other studio assistance on this project
- $1800 of this will cover three months of post-residency studio rent and overhead for dedicated time and space for book editing
- $1900 of this will cover the production and shipping costs of the amazing rewards and all pre-order books
- $3500 of this will cover three months administration and overhead to allow for full-time work on completing this project
