USB Garage aims to bring fun and style for car lovers with engaging products that connect with automobile culture.
We are passionate and enthusiastic about design and automobiles and we aim to combine these passions into a new line of products that are functional, simple and presented to tell a story. We aim to produce them licensed, in small limited runs and with certificates of authenticity.
With your help we will make a collection of products that engage users emotionally and celebrate automobile culture with a touch of modernity.
WE HAVE AN EMPTY GARAGE
We have an empty garage and we need your help to fill it up with great vehicles: Popular classics, modern icons, automobile rarities, two wheel classics or great commercial vehicles. They all deserve a place in our garage.

From the very beginning we have intended to make simple products that tell a story and make people smile. We are seasoned designers with years of experience working on complex and serious projects. Designing something simple and fun has been a welcome breath of fresh air.
It's not rocket science to design a vinyl pen drive or a designer notebook but it's not as simple as it first appears. It requires a skilled hand and plenty of patience. During this project, we have done countless design iterations to find the sweet spot between over-stylised car miniatures and over-simplified kids toys. We have also researched every trick in the book to produce them in low volumes at reasonable cost. Finally, we have spent countless hours negotiating and building trust with some of the World's biggest car brands... and we have done this for seven different car models.
Here are some images of the design process in no particular order, from sketch to prototyping and including CAD modelling, 3D printing iterations, graphics, mould making, etc.
Our original plan was to launch a collection of five different cars. After months of negotiations with several brands, we came to the conclusion that it was both too costly and too risky to organise a coordinated launch with all five models. After careful consideration, we chose to focus only on one model and learn from the Kickstarter experience. The VW Type 2 Samba was the obvious choice, both because of its iconic value and its broader appeal.
Our current plan is to get one Kickstarter experience under our belt, and hopefully raise enough funds to pay for new licensing deals. Our ultimate goal is to expand our collection even further with new cars and new products that are simple, useful and connect with automobile culture.
Here are some random images of the work we have already done, at different stages of the design process. Either as CAD drawings or as prototypes. With your help, we will be able to raise enough funds to pay for new licensing fees for these cars, and give you what you want, choice.
Our delivery dates will be influenced by our licensing agreement. VW reserves the right to require modifications to the product and ensure they are made to their standards, and those of our backers. During this process, we have to pass a total of four product approvals before we can finally ship. We have already passed two (concept and product design approval) and we are yet to pass the final two ( pre-production samples and production quality controls). These controls are very streamlined and highly efficient and should take at most two weeks. Because design approval has already been granted we expect these to go very smoothly.
Although our products are relatively simple to manufacture and we have already worked out the supply chain in advance, we don't take anything for granted. In our schedule we have added enough contingency time to account for any unexpected delays.
Over the next few months we plan to deliver according to the following timeline:

Risks and challenges
Delivering a product is a rewarding process, but it’s not one without risks and challenges. The most common obstacles we could face during completion are the factory issues ranging from defective products to delayed shipments. We could also face delays if VW requires to make some modifications to the design to ensure we meet high standards of quality.
After 15 years designing and delivery products, we have learnt prepare ourselves as best as possible for these unforeseen situations. In this case, by organising a backup supply chain and by accounting for unavoidable delays in our timeline. We do not anticipate delays beyond these. In the case these happen we will give you regular updates on the progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
