September Update: Artwork and Beta buy-in
We have very exciting news for all of you, we decided to include additional artwork with Other World Mapper beyond what we promised during the campaign. We have been working with the talented Josephe Vandel on artwork previously planned and to create brand new symbols. He's finished two sets already and we are collaborating on more assets for Other World Mapper.
Originally planned for Beta 2, we are moving up the schedule and including a good portion of the finished assets with Beta 1.
Updates to Basic Edition Artwork
Brand new core fantasy set #1
This is a brand new set, including a large variety of unique mountains, hills and other landscapes, as well as man made structures and more. This totals 200+ unique symbols. We are including them in 3 different color themes, which totals 600+ symbols. We've been using all the symbols with OWM and they look great! The map below is a sample showing a small subset of this artwork.
Updates to Art Expansion Edition (and above) Artwork
Brand new core fantasy set #2 In addition to the core fantasy set #1, the Art Expansion Edition backers will have another full set. The second core fantasy set can be used standalone, but it's also meant to fit with the upcoming sci-fi miniset part of the Art Expansion tier. This sets adds 200+ unique symbols that hadn't been part of the original reward. We are including it in 5 different color themes: Desert, Polar Mountains, Granite-Range, Medieval Highlands and black and white, for a total of 1000+ new symbols.
The collaboration has been great so far, so expect more of Vandel's artwork in future updates. And, if you liked our symbols from the campaign, don't worry! We are still finishing those to be included with Other World Mapper! More Art!
Finally, and if this wasn't enough good news, Anna B. Meyer, the awesome fantasy cartographer who supported this campaign from early on has graciously given us permission to distribute her Greyhawk symbols with Other World Mapper! Check out her work at: http://www.ghmaps.net/
Several backers have contacted us over the last few months about upgrading their pledge to beta. Now that Alpha 3 has proven very stable and having very few functional issues, we are ready to increase the number of people working with Alpha 3 (and Beta 1 once it's ready). We have a limited number of additional openings, so we'll take requests for upgrading pledges on a first come first serve basis. If you want to upgrade your pledge just send us a Kickstarter message and please keep in mind that:
- Alpha 3 is what is currently released and it only includes support for overland maps.
- The UI is not the final UI. Alpha 3 is about the 2D engine and functionality/tools.
- The artwork included is only the preliminary artwork.
- At this time we are only opening the buy-in for Kickstarter backers.
Per our schedule, Beta 1 will add support for dungeon maps, clean up the UI and add a significant portion of the finalized artwork (including Vandel's work).
Development Status and Alpha 3
In the development front things are going very well. We released Alpha 3 earlier this month and Alpha and beta testers have had very few functional issues with it, which is very good news for our schedule. There's been several suggestions for improving the UI, most minor and some more involved, which we are working through. Some of the changes may cause small delays, but we think they are worth it.
Our project timeline currently shows the release being pushed to January, mostly from the additional functionality and small changes we've made from backer feedback. As always, we'll keep you well updated on our progress and any changes to the schedule.
Next update will be in late October and should be another detailed one aimed at functional changes and a sneak peak into more artwork.
