The Slack macOS app is slow and ugly.
Now, to understand why, you must understand that their engineers made a forgivable tradeoff: they made a common HTML/Javascript codebase and used it across all their apps. The benefit to them is lower development costs. But the costs to users are are that the app is slow, chews your battery, hogs your memory, and just doesn't look all that great.
So i'd like to make Taut: A Slack client that is fast and beautiful.
The plan is to create a macOS native app. This way I can take advantage of the speed of native Swift code, and take advantage of the rich visuals made possible by direct use of Cocoa/AppKit. I believe it is possible to make a great experience that will save you a lot of time, and make your daily communications just a little more hassle-free.
Risques et défis
If this project is successfully funded, I'll check with the Slack company that there are no issues with this going forwards. Since they have gone to the effort of publishing an API for their app, I assume this will be fine. If this is a problem, however, I'll ask kickstarter to refund everyone.
One potential risk is Slack's API being rate limited. From what i've read on their site, it appears this is only intended for bots, and should not affect an app such as mine.
