Join us on the next step of our journey to help make this creation and tour a reality. This is our biggest, most exciting independant project to date and we need your support to help us create the production to the high international standards we have set ourselves. From as little as £5 you will be making a massive difference to the future of James Cousins Company.
A NOTE FROM JAMES:
I believe dance should be engaging. Entertaining. Dance should move us in ways no other art form can. Dance should take us on a journey, through the ups and the downs, be exciting. Inspiring. As a choreographer I aim to do all these things and more.
Since winning the New Adventures Choreographer Award in 2012, my career has completely shifted from being a dancer to full time choreographer. I have been so fortunate to have had some incredible experiences, commissioned to create productions in countries I had never even dreamed of going to and worked with incredible people who have helped nurture and develop me as an artist.
But it's time for me to create something for me again. For you. At home. With my dancers and a creative team that I've picked. I want to do this for so many reasons. Partly so I can continue to develop and discover my own voice with my collaborators and to set my own parameters and explore what is really exciting me. But also to continue to expand my company and share our work with audiences at home in the UK and across the globe.
We already have huge interest to tour this new show that'll be a double bill of the critically acclaimed There We Have Been and my new work, Without Stars. Performances across the UK as well as Asia and South America are already confirmed but we can't do it without financial support.
We have stripped back the budget as much as we can in order to do this as cost effectively as possible whilst still maintaining our high production values. We have just been successful in receiving funding from the Arts Council England to support half the project costs, which is amazing, but will only get us half way there.
Please help us reach our goal and help us take the next step. If the creation of Without Stars doesn't happen then the tour can't take place, and the future of James Cousins Company will be put at risk. This project is a huge next step for me as a choreographer and for the company; our biggest to date, and there is so much to gain from it. We hope you'll come on this journey with us.
Thank you for your time,
Risks and challenges
Obviously there are always risks involved with a big project but we have been planning this now for 6 months and have made sure we are as prepared as possible to meet any challenges that may arise.
Potential risks could include:
- Dancers getting injured. It happens and there's not much you can do when it does. We are going to employ a dancer to cover the piece so should anything happen they can step in. As a company we have dealt with injury a lot before (two days before a show in one case!) and still managed to deliver our high quality production.
- Not selling enough tickets at venues. We are employing a brilliant marketing specialist and PR consultant to help sell the show as best we can.
- Not getting enough income. We have now found out that we have been awarded Arts Council Funding towards this project. This alleviates a lot of this risk. Other partners are all confirmed and have agreed their financial support too. The only income strands we could fail on are this and ticket sales but hopefully with our strong marketing strategy we should be fine.
