About

Why?

As with many others, I have found myself with an unnatural attraction to zombies. I am fascinated with the concept of zombies, books about zombies, movies about zombies and drawings of zombies. I love the fact that you can find a zombie rendition of almost every creature on earth. Go ahead... think of a creature, then search the internet for a zombie version. Odds are you'll find it.

When attending a comic book conference and seeing all of the zombie items available I thought that it would be great if I could get myself rendered as a zombie.

What is being developed?

I am developing a process for capturing a 3D rendering of an individual and then post processing it by adding features characteristic of a zombie. Then produce  a figurine of the individual as a zombie using a 3D printer. Ultimately, I would set up a booth at various conferences and shows that would allow people to come to the booth, get scanned, and purchase a zombie figurine of themselves. They would have a variety of zombie features from which they can select for their figurine.

What are the steps in the development?

  • The first step is to finalize the process for capturing the 3D image utilizing the Windows Kinect sensor.  My process and software would not be a general capture tool, but instead would be specifically focused on the capture of human subjects. With this in mind, the process can be refined to produce better scans with less effort.
  • The fundamentals for melding zombie features into the 3D capture are already developed. The remaining development of this step is to expand the library of zombie features and improve their resolution for higher quality figurines.
  • The final step involves setting up the process to adjust the 3D capture so that it can readily be printed on a 3D printer.

Prototype.

In order to show you an example of what I am out to do I have created a prototype. The final product will be more detailed and refined. That's the main work left in development. But this will provide you an idea of the concept. These are pictures of the subject and then the zombierine of the subject.

What is paid with the funding?

The funding dollars will pay for the final development work needed including the post processing of the scan. It also includes the creation of the additional features. Finally, it will be used to procure 3D printers for production.

Risks and challenges

As we have already produced a prototype this has helped us identify the largest potential risks.

The largest one that we see is the risk on the ability to provide the capability to an easy method for people to submit a 3D scan. The photograph method is straight forward with a set of still photos. However, it tends to not provide as much detail as we would prefer. We prefer the Kinect, but want to provide a methodology that will make it less prone to issues and easier for people to accomplish.

Pledge $50 or more About $50

The reward for this pledge level is that we will provide you with a figurine of you as a zombie. If you have access to a computer and a Windows Kinect then you will be provided with software to scan yourself and then submit the scan to our website. If you do not have access to a Windows Kinect you will be provided instructions on how to take a series of digital photos that you can submit. (The detail of the figurine will be better if done with Kinect). The figurine will be a bust that is approximately 5" tall, made of plastic, and a single neutral color. The zombie features will be pre-defined and include the zombie eye and mouth.
