We are simply fed up with the current state of the residential lock market. The average consumer has basically two choices. The first is, you can buy a lock which you can afford at your hardware store and knowingly or unknowingly accept the fact that the lock offers almost zero security. Or you can go to the locksmith and buy a high security lock and spend a small fortune to protect your family and possessions. Almost every major lock company is now owned by a large corporate conglomerate. Most of the locks you can buy at any price which are competing side by side on the shelves, are in fact owned by one of a few parent companies. This means they are not really competing with one another at all. It is no coincidence that there are no high security options at the hardware store. This is by design, as these companies want to maintain the market for these high margin, mass produced, low quality products. It is essentially their bread and butter. They know that those truly concerned with security will go to a locksmith shop to buy their higher quality products. We set out to upset this balance by creating an ultra high security lock that the average consumer can afford.
Almost every other modern high security lock increases the security of a lock by increasing the complexity and number of tumbler pins within the lock. This design strategy increases security, but also increases the cost of the lock substantially. We tirelessly researched the history of the lock and came up with a concept which takes cues from the distant past. We incorporated design features from the middle ages to increased the security of our design. Once upon a time locks did not have tumbler pins. The security of a lock was derived from the shape of the key itself. The key was in essence a perfect convoluted shaped tool that was made specifically to enter a lock which had many barriers inside it called "wards". These wards prevented other objects from entering the lock. The advent of malleable metal that could be formed into any shape ultimately ruined the security of these locks and gave way to a new form of locks generally known as permutation locks. The pin tumbler lock was the most convenient example of this new lock strategy and replaced the warded lock in the early 1900's as the primary form of residential security and has remained virtually unchanged for over a century.
The locksmithing industry has spawned many tools to defeat the common pin tumbler lock, unfortunately these tools have become widely available to criminals. This fact has yielded the common pin tumbler lock useless, and these days it merely serves to keep your door closed in heavy winds.
Understanding that all the tools that have been created to manipulate the pins require access to the pins, we set out to see if we could shield the pins from these types of tools by returning to the idea of a convoluted shape key and warded key hole.
Our lock contains a cylindrical shield which surrounds the key hole and protects the pins from being reached by tools which enter the key way. We also incorporated the pin tumbler mechanism, along with the many combinations of pinning that made it so very great in the first place.
Because our lock is constructed with simple shapes and common pin tumbler technology, we are able to offer it at a much lower price than all other high security locks. We intend on providing the average consumer with the piece of mind that the lock was originally intended to provide. That being, that you need an actual key to open the lock!
The Bowley Lock Company Inc. was started by two brothers in May of 2015. We of course shared our concept with our friends and family. Two of our childhood friends joined with us and with their help we were able to fund the patent, development and prototyping of the lock. So far we have funded the company on our shared resources but do not have the funding to produce this lock in the quantities required to bring our costs down so we can offer it at a reasonable price. We need to raise enough money to purchase the components in high quantities. The machines our parts are made on are costly to set up, however these machines once operating can produce the parts very fast and very efficiently (Swiss lathe/screw machine). The costs come down as the quantity goes up, in order for us to offer this lock at a price that the average consumer can afford we have to set our goal at at least 3500 locks. This is the point in which higher quantities do not offer any further significant discounts.
If we have a successful campaign, we will have the capital to move the company forward. This will allow us to purchase additional product and we will be able to offer the locks through retailers around North America. Because of the retail mark up, these locks will be priced at a slightly higher price than we are offering it to our supporters here on Kickstarter. We know our locks will provide a better option to consumers, and hope if nothing else we help change the landscape of the residential lock market by bringing more high security options to consumers like you.
Our lock fits almost all standard doors. It can be installed in doors with a 60mm or 70mm (2-3/8" or 2-3/4") backset. Uses a standard 1" dead bolt hole and can accommodate 1-1/2"-2-1/8" hole.
Risks and challenges
There are no technical design challenges left. Both the lock and the key have been completely designed and are functioning perfectly on our homes, and have been doing so for many months. The lock design has been reviewed by several industry experts all of which are very excited for us to offer the lock for sale.
The Lock Cylinder:
All the components for the lock have been completely designed and have been quoted on by several local Canadian machine shops. The pricing has been solidified and there are no expected issues with production. Small runs have already been successfully completed without issue and all the processes have been proven.
The Key: The key was more challenging as no key supplier had ever seen anything like it. Every key supplier we requested from, refused to quote it. We however have developed our own manufacturing process with the help of local Canadian suppliers and can now guarantee the key quality and accuracy. Once again all the processes have already been proven.
Assembly: The Assembly of the locks is our biggest challenge. The lock is simple in design and easy to assemble, but it takes time. We have shown with almost zero experience someone can assemble the lock and pin it in under 5 minutes. We expect that to decrease with experience and proper tools.The more locks we sell, the faster we will have to assemble them. This means we will have to employ more people in order to meet our goal. This is a problem we hope to have and is simply a matter of manpower and training.
We will ensure every lock and every key works before it leaves our factory. The nice thing about making the parts in Canada, under Canadian procurement laws is that if they are manufactured out of our tolerances we can and will refuse the parts and get new ones at no charge.
We do not feel there are any risks with respect to completing this project. We are allowing for material deliveries, manufacturing time and assembly time. There is a small risk that we cannot attain the manpower to assemble the locks on time, but can say any delays will be minimal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
