Forget what you know about the vampire genre. Fang hunts the hunters. An action horror comic of redemption, revenge and self discovery.

The Story:

Both revered and feared by his fellow creatures of the night, Fang is the champion of an evil empire. Forget what you know about the vampire genre. Fang hunts the hunters. "FANG" is full of ghouls, gunplay and gore. Fang is an action horror comic of redemption, revenge and self discovery. It's John Woo's the Killer meets Blade with a bit of Golden Child and Big Trouble in Little China thrown in for good measure. In Vampire lore, there's a legend of an assassin whose sole purpose is to murder vampire hunters. He’s sometimes called the Weeping Reaper or the Great Reluctant Evil. Our story centers on "Lo Fang", the chief assassin of the Kiang-Shi (Chinese Vampire) Empire. Dressed in white designer suits and trench coat, Fang is as stylish as he is deadly. Armed with a pair of AR-90 hand cannons and a Chinese broad sword, he travels the world stalking vampire hunters under the reign of the Kiang-Shi Empress.

In his natural life, Lo Fang was a monk who fought against the Kiang Shi* Infestation of China. Using his mastership of Kung Fu, he and his monks were able to repel the undead onslaught. This greatly angered the Kiang-Shi empress whose sole desire was to rule the world of man. She had Fang captured, and personally turned him into one of her kind. Upon awakening, Fang found that his body had been covered with a tattoo resembling the Vampire Empress. With the mystical tattoo etched in his skin Fang was now under the Empress' complete control. Fang became her chief assassin, using the prowess he once used to destroy the Kiang-Shi to now dispose of Vampire Hunters around the world. Though he was Kiang-Shi, and the consumption of blood was essential to his survival, Fang begged to never force him to feed upon an unarmed or innocent victim. The empress granted his wish, and thus The Legend of the Weeping Reaper was born.

After a millennia of waiting, as prophesied, a weapon capable of tipping the balance has appeared. In an ashram in California, monks guard the one thing capable of halting the Kiang-Shi Empress’s conquest of Earth. She assigns Fang the task of finding the weapon and destroying it. Fang regrettably undergoes his mission.

Fang embarks on his mission to find the weapon, though the "weapon" may not be what he, or anyone else, imagined.

The Story behind the story:

I first met David Atchison through a friend of mine back in the early 2000's.  As creators, and fans of the same types of comics and films, we quickly became friends.  I eventually moved to Atlanta from New York where David was based.  We became roommates, and almost immediately began kicking ideas around.  Through this process, David told me a story about a story he started but never went anywhere with.  It needed an artist to come to life.  I looked at it, and immediately I knew this was the project for me.  Right away, I started on designs, and we kicked around some more ideas and tightened the story.  I designed a logo, started working on pages, and then I had to find work to pay bills, 'cause that's important.

Who am I?:

Gustavo Vazquez is an artist, producer, actor and traveler raised in Brooklyn who loves the art of storytelling. A self-taught illustrator, he started his career as a comic book artist for Marvel, DC and other comic book companies, as well as drawing storyboards for animation, commercials and music videos. He continues to work as an illustrator and amateur photographer, while also creating and developing projects for Film and Television. Django is also a fan of WWE professional wrestling.

and David?:

David Atchison is a freelance writer & producer whose work has appeared in a variety of mediums. He co-created the Occult Crimes Taskforce with actress Rosario Dawson and illustrator Tony Shasteen. The OCT is currently in development for television with Valhalla Entertainment and the A&E Network. He penned the Method Man Graphic Novel for the Hip Hop mainstay and Grand Central Publishing. Atchison also co-wrote True Believer, a back door pilot for NBC/ Universal's SyFy Channel. Other multimedia projects include Singularity for Activision Games and the Warriors Graphic Novel Adaptation for Paramount Pictures/ Dabel Brothers Pro. In 2010, Atchison accepted a position with the 20th Century Fox Film Entertainment Story Department where he helps develop films.

There's also our colorist, Ross Campbell:

Ross A. Campbell is a debuting comic book colorist born in Scotland and educated in France. Currently working on Dynamite's ongoing comic book adaptation of Paizo's award-winning RPG Pathfinder, he also helps out with Jim Zub's Skullkickers and jumps on board any project Gus throws his way. Other clients of notable repute are Image Comics and Udon. Also a passable all-round artist, he dabbles in full illustration, traditional and digital for a hobby and is also a budding musician. Socially awkward unless drunk.

Fang got put to the side for a while.  Life happened, I got some other work that could pay the bills, and eventually Fang turned into something akin to a cold case file.  Something that had to sit for a while until we (really, me) had the time to come back to it.   I moved to CA, and after a few unsuccessful tries to wake Fang up from his slumber, back it went into the file.  Life went on while Fang slept.

That is, until a few months ago.  I was going through some paperwork, and came across a couple of old drawings for a few cover ideas I had for Fang.  That perked me up a little.  I had been stagnant in my drawing, and was a little tired of working for other people.  I decided to go through all my papers and artwork, and dig up every little thing I had done for Fang, and breathe some fresh life into it.  I started by reworking a short story I had asked David to write a couple years back to introduce the character.  I originally wanted to showcase this story at conventions, and get some interest back into it.

I figured I had something, as some old friends I ran into started asking about Fang.  "Hey, man.  Whatever happened to that vampire project you were working on?".  This reignited the flame, and confirmed that there was still interest in a cool, different vampire story.  It was time to reawaken the Weeping Reaper!

So, without telling anyone, including David, I started working on some pages and designs again.  I need to really get back into doing this, for real this time, with the idea that I was going to get it done, no matter what.  This was my chance to really do something I was passionate about, and show the world, (or at least a few hundred comic book fans) what I was about.  What I had trained this twenty-plus years for.  I want to release Fang out into the world and wreak some havoc!  And here we are.

So, there you have it.  The story behind the story.  Now, let's get to the good stuff...

The Goal:

The nitty gritty.  The script is finished, designs are done, and the graphic novel is about a third of the way sketched out, but there's still along way to go to get this book done and into your hands.  As this campaign is going, I am trying to finish sketching out the rest of the pages so that when the campaign is just about done, I can get to drawing the pages right away.

I've set upon this journey several times now, but have always been stopped in my tracks due to a lack of funding.  I end up stopping production to do other jobs and by the time I'm done, the momentum is gone.  I'm trying to end that trend.  It's also gone through several phases of design and ideas on how to make this book a different experience than most comics out there.  I've finally figured it out.  What I need now is the support of fans and friends (and anyone else who is interested in breathing life into a fun project) to make sure I can create the art for the book and get it out and printed.  If I can achieve my Kickstarter goal, I will be able to share this epic story with whoever is interested and invested. This is a project that's been years in the making, and I am so proud to finally have the opportunity to share it with you.

That's where Kickstarter, and you, come in!  I know I'm asking a lot by asking you to spend your hard earned money on something that isn't yet tangible.  What you're buying into is a dream and a promise.  A dream that I've had for many years now.  To work on my very own project, on a character I own and helped develop.  This is your chance to invest in something that will give back to the creators.  The dream of the every man.  I also said you were buying into a promise.  The promise is to get the best work I've ever produced in my long career.  I strive to get better and better each time I work, but this time I've got a little extra passion in this project.  I've worked on making it the best I can make it, and I feel at this point that I've either got to do it, or I've got to do something else.  And I really want to do this.

Kickstarter has created a way for me to work on my dream project, and get the interest of people who really want to see it.  Real investors.  Because you're invested in the project from the ground up, and you really do want to see your investment come to fruition.  It allows creators, like me, to be able to work on the project at hand, and not be distracted by outside influences.  If this project is successfully funded, the money has to come upfront.  It keeps me, the creativity, and the book going.  However, and I hate to bring this up, if I don't make my goal, you get your money back, I get nothing, and it's back to the drawing board.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I've tried to set my goal at a realistic amount to make this project happen. Now I just need to hit that goal.

Wondering where that money will go? Well, as I said, part of it will help me have enough capitol to draw the book, and pay the colorist and letterer to bring my lines to life. Plus, I'm going to need to get those incentives made for you. Printing costs, as well, for the limited run of books I'm going to make for this campaign.

Upon first sight, $40,000 seems like a lot of money. However, Kickstarter campaigns are not straight donations and in reality a campaign costs a lot of time and money to fulfill rewards ordered and manage correspondance. So only part of the money asked for actually goes towards creative production of the book.

Production costs- I am pretty much the entire creative team for the book, and if you break down what funding I'd get for the 96+ pages of full production work I'd create, the rates break down to less than I would get paid elsewhere. Not including funding for the time to adapt, letter, design, create promotional images, covers, pin ups, take care of the Kickstarter, or work on the sketchbook. In short; I am not becoming rich, by any means, with this campaign. My only intent is to be able to work on FANG, and be able to survive through the process!

Kickstarter/Amazon Fees - Roughly 8%-10% of final funding

Taxes - self employed rates apply

Production of books - These rates vary depending on amount ordered, but takes up a nice chunk of funds

Shipping & shipping supply - Another large chunk, depending on amount shipped

Buffer Amount - This should be included in ANY Kickstarter. This includes money aside for dropped pledges, lost books, refund requests, and any errors and miscalculations.

Also, so that you know where I am in the project, I will be posting regular updates here on Kickstarter, and on a Facebook page I've started up specifically for this project. I'll definitely do some write-up updates, post pictures and art, and I will try to do some more videos as I go along. As I do this, I will also be handling the production process, so that when the book is complete, I can get it to you as soon as possible. You will get to be a part of this process and see the magic happen! Should I surpass my goal, depending on the amount, I will add some more incentives, exclusive to this campaign and its investors.

I am focused on Issue 1 of Fang right now because I don't want to keep backers waiting for over a year for the whole series to be completed before they receive their reward. I will keep everyone updated as each issue is finished and the next one started.

How Kickstarter Works...

Kickstarter is unlike regular online ordering experiences in that you are not just buying an item for precise arrival, you are joining me in my personal adventure to complete this project. You'll be with me for both the victories as well as the bumps and difficulties, all culminating in receiving the final product, which I will have given so much to achieve. Kickstarter is more about supporting ideas, people, and projects than it is to receive an item right away. And so you're aware of everything before you join me (and FANG) on this adventure!

Step 1. Create a Kickstarter account, and determine payment method

Step 2. Decide which Reward you'd like, taking special note of any shipping estimates.

Step 3. Wait and see what happens! If the campaign is successful by TBA, then your card will be charged and your reward is secured. If the campaign is unsuccessful, then your card will NOT be charged.

Step 4. (optional ;) ) If you would really like to see this project succeed, then the most helpful thing you could do is help spread the word! Tweets, facebook posts, blog posts, whatever you want to do to help… I would eternally appreciate it!
