Hello, and welcome to the Signalverse! I'm Blake Michael Nelson, and for the past few years I've been writing a series of prose superhero novels, set in an anything-goes superhero metropolis called Signal City. There are currently six books in the series: two volumes of The Adventures of Jack and Miracle Girl; Orchid; Disreputable Persons; The White Ribbon Runs the Red Lights; and, now, Champions Weekly. (Although these books take place in the same world -- the Signalverse -- they're all stand-alone stories and can be read in any order.)
These are fun, fast-paced superhero adventures, full of action, but they're kind of offbeat in a way, too: the protagonists are usually fairly ordinary people.
The sixth book in the series is called Champions Weekly. This one's about a reporter, Ally, who works for a magazine which specializes in superhero news. Ally's editor gives her an unlikely assignment: he wants her to find the Signal City Flare, a minor superhero who made a minor splash about a year ago, but who hasn't been seen since. Ally hits the streets, but soon finds herself on the run from a squad of supervillains, who have their own reasons for wanting to find the Flare. You can read the first chapter here, to get a sense of it.
Champions Weekly is complete -- it's been edited and proofread -- but it needs cover art. So far, all of the art for this series has been done by the awe-inspiring Tom Martin, known for all kinds of awe-inspiring stuff (including a great guest run on Axe Cop) and I'd like to commission him to do the cover art for this book as well. Writing books is basically a hobby for me at this point -- I don't make any real money at it -- and these kinds of production costs are, unfortunately, becoming harder and harder for me to justify, so I'm asking for your help in order to make this happen.
I've got all kinds of great stuff lined up for you, should you choose to back this project. Rewards include copies of all five previous books, signed paperbacks, a short instrumental score composed for the book by a friend of mine, and The Signal City Visitor's Guide, a mammoth seventy-page world guide to the Signalverse. This thing is insane -- it includes over three hundred character biographies, a lovely map of Signal City, a fourteen-page time line (covering everything from 1926 to 2018), and all of the artwork Tom has done for the series so far.
As previously stated, Champions Weekly is already complete, apart from the cover art, so the turn-around time on this project should be fairly short.
Silver Age-style superheroics, relatable characters, a really deep and detailed universe...this series has it all. And Champions Weekly, in particular, is a first-rate superhero mystery story that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Check it out!
I'm an independent writer living in rural Minnesota. I've self-published several books -- the five Signalverse novels, a series of short fantasy novellas, and a pulp-inspired action-adventure story set in the 1920's called Sam Fortune and the Wisdom of the Ancients. My personal website can be found here.
Risks and challenges
There's nothing too risky here; I've self-published over half a dozen books and I'm familiar with the process. Once I've got the cover art in hand, it shouldn't take too terribly long to get this one out there. If it happens I do run into some kind of trouble, I'll be sure to keep backers updated on exactly what's going on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
