About this project
I remember very clearly the first time I heard, "Ugly" by Fishbone. My punkrock older sister pulled me into her room and loaded the record. I remember cringing at the opening, the grating sounds of the trombones and the band members chanting the lyrics. But the atonal drone gave way to upbeat, energetic, even jumpy music and we danced and laughed at the angry, funny lyrics. The guys on the album dressed so much cooler than I did. I wanted to dress like them, to be like them. We listened to Black Flag, D.R.I., The Circle Jerks and others. That was my first glimpse into punkrock culture in the 80's and I was hooked.
So I watched Penelope Spheeris' "Suburbia," "Sid and Nancy" and "Repo Man" and I got together with other kids and traded albums and made mix tapes. And, like a lot of the scenes between the coasts, there weren't a lot of us. So, if we saw a kid with a punk tee on, we became friends. The music, punk, new wave and ska, was the glue that held us all together. We snuck out at night to meet up, get into trouble and make out with girls.
I'm going to make a full-length feature film loosely based on my experiences sneaking out as a punk kid growing up in Colorado. The film highlights alternative subcultures in the the late 80's, i.e., punks, skateboarders, skinheads and hippies. Please donate and feel free to share your experiences with the music, the shows and the people.
The film will be entered into film festivals around the world. Join me and together, we'll make an amazing movie! Please post this page on Facebook, Twitter and share it with all your friends. Thanks.
