Purple Llama Coffee and Records is a coffee shop and record store focusing on specialty coffee and a highly curated selection of new and reissued records. We opened our doors in April of 2017 and have been happily serving GREAT coffee from the finest roasters from around the world while spinning/selling records from artists spanning all genres and locales.
For us, coffee and vinyl records compliment one another. Creating specialty coffee is a ritual in the same way that spinning vinyl is. Both require one to take a little extra time to focus on the product and method.
As fans of coffee, we care about origin, roaster, roast profile, and extraction. Brewing a cup of fantastic coffee makes the consumer a part of the process that begins with the farmer and ends with that magical liquid in your mug. The consumer has the power and control to bring out the best in that coffee.
We believe the musical experience is heightened on vinyl, allowing the listener to feel a part of the musical process. Pulling out a vinyl record from the shelf, dropping the needle, staring at the cover, and placing it prominently by the turntable allows you to be part of the magic.
Combining these two experiences is what inspired us to open our café and introduce this subscription service. We cherish those moments during the week when we can drop the needle, prepare a pour over, relax, and sink into the experience.
Our subscription delivers that experience to you in a box sent directly to your door every two months, containing a bag of coffee from a rotating selection of the finest international roasters, and one record chosen based on the coffee or coffee roaster's country of origin. We listen to records and drink coffee all day, every day at our shop. This subscription service is our way of including you in our daily ritual of coffee and music. We want to welcome you to the Purple Llama, whether you're here with us in person, or just in spirit!
One more thing: We are proud to partner with Foundations of Music. A charity that helps to provide and support music education in over 30 under-funded Chicago Public Schools. We will donate 5% of the total amount raised from this Kickstarter campaign to FoM!
Risks and challenges
Buying coffee from international roasters is a tricky thing. There is generally a hefty minimum which varies with each roaster. This issue is minimized because we can also pick up coffee for the shop. However, getting a solid base of subscribers will allow us to hit that minimum and deliver the quality and freshness that meets our high standards.
As for vinyl records, most of the labels we work with only produce small runs of each album. We attempt to plan our subscription lineup months in advance, but the records we want will not always be available when we want them. Amassing a larger subscription base will allow us to guarantee labels a certain amount of sales, and make it possible for us to have exclusive colored vinyl, and other goodies for our subscribers in the future!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
