How do you cast delicate lace into large scale sculpture? Join me, and we'll find out...
The Aspen Adventure - Casting Lace Sculpture by Rachelle Gardner
Lace. Cast into large sculpture? That just doesn't sound right. Well, I want to make it right. So very right. And delectable.
I make lace because of its delicacy, its history, its ability to speak on a subtle level. I re-contextualize this traditional craft to speak of our time and our modern experience.
The end goal of this project is to bring full scale solo exhibitions of my lace sculpture to local and regional art centers: Leedy-Voulkos Art Center (KC), Lawrence Arts Center, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE).
This project will transform my 2-D lace work into 3-D large scale sculpture. To do this, I’ll study at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado to learn how to cast fabric sculpture. In just over six months, my lace work has been selected for a public commission, museum exhibition and several juried exhibitions across the country. This work is going places and others believe in it too.
This project has already been backed financially by the ArtsKC Fund of The Arts Council of Metro KC (Inspiration Grant) and The Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Through the generosity of local residents, I've even acquired free housing for my stay. I've hammered project costs down as far as they will go, but the budget nail still threatens to stub toes...and snag my lace to bits.
That's where you come in. One of my long term goals is to engage the community more in my work and this is the first step, inviting you to be a part spreading lace across our region and get an inside look throughout the process.
Please know that your donations go towards direct costs of the project and that each reward is individually made just for you.
