Possessions is an indie strategy RPG and mystery adventure game for PC and mobile, inspired by games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem.  Written by a web developer who loves story games, it will be delivered by episodic updates as a web series where a player's decisions are recorded and used to influence the next chapter.

The Grand Union is on the brink of ruin, with bandits and monsters roaming the land once more.  No one trusts anyone, not the merchants, not the military, not the government... not even the church.  Follow the journey of two revolutionaries in their tiny merchant caravan as they recruit allies, battle enemies, and take over and fix this corrupted world.

  • Casual Pace, Constant Updates: Rather than encouraging constant play, Possessions is meant to be played casually and in a relaxed setting.  Possessions will have periodic updates, so you can check in every now and then to see how the game evolves over time!
  • Play on Phone or Browser: Possessions is available to play anywhere you have an internet connection!  Enjoy the game wherever you can take a mobile device with you!
  • Pay Once, Play Forever: Even though Possessions is a web game, it has a beginning and an end.  All the updates are free once you buy the game and Possessions will not have a subscription cost.
  • Free to Play, If You Dare: Short on cash but still want to play Possessions?  The Goddess of Chaos will let you play on one condition: no do-overs.  Death is permanent, unfound knowledge is lost, and decisions cannot be altered.  Are you up to the challenge?  (This mode will be available to paid members as well).

 

 

In this game you will inevitably engage in combat, whether it's against bandits, monsters, or the Imperial Army. Deploy your units against theirs and use strategy to outclass your opponent in tactical turn-based combat.

Every action is a skill, which can come from a variety of sources.  Some skills are bound to species, some come from profession, some come from equipment, but most skills come from equipment proficiency.  Using a particular equipment will increase proficiency EXP in that equipment type, unlocking new skills that fit your unit's playstyle.

There are many different professions in Possessions, all of which serve different roles in both combat and investigation.  The game will require you to maintain a well-rounded army, but there are always mercenaries available for hire if you are lacking on a particular strength.  Be warned, for there are conmen and scam artists even in the mercenary industry.  Though they aren't important to the story, you may see the same mercenary more than once in your game.

The combat system in Possessions is all about positioning and terrain.  Some units fight better alongside others, while some units specifically target those who group together.  Take advantage of terrain bonuses and study your enemy's team composition to ensure victory.

Combat is not without risks.  When a humanoid unit reaches 0 HP, it will become incapacitated.  Incapacitated units can be rescued, but the rescuer and incapacitated unit must both leave the battle, lowering your chances of victory.  If this unit is not rescued by the end of battle, the unit dies and is lost forever.  You may also command a unit to attack an incapacitated enemy to kill it, granting the killer lots of EXP.  However, there may be unintended consequences for unnecessarily killing incapacitated units.

 

 

Direct confrontation is not always the answer, as ambush and conspiracy await you at every corner.  The Grand Union has a wealth of knowledge and history that will save you from making a disastrous decision.  Dive into the web of lies and deceit to uncover what to do and who your true enemies are.

Any valuable information you come across can be stored and remember in the female protagonist's Blue Book.  She can later use this information when talking to other characters to extract information or reveal lies.

Of course, you can't get everything done with only knowledge.  To properly investigate, you will need to bring along a team with the appropriate skills. Every unit brings along a unique talent to solve puzzles, whether it be picking locks, fire magic, or flight.

The crew travels across the land of Aurisen in a disguised merchant caravan recruiting heroes, gathering support, gaining influence, and completing missions, all while evading the Imperial Army.  The protagonists must gather support from all 5 provinces in the Grand Union, and possibly from the neighboring nation in the Far West as well.  Each province is home to a different species with their own culture and secrets which you must learn if you hope to unravel the corruption within.

The caravan serves as base of their operations.  On the road, they manage their army, organize inventory, and decide on the next mission.  Depending on the current region, the caravan may run into events while travelling from one area to another.  However, being in a disguised caravan means that you are also a target for highway robbers and Imperial trade inspectors.  Be prepared to negotiate or fight at any time.

To avoid notice, the caravan camps outside in the woods at night. Two characters are appointed for the nightwatch to warn everyone in case of danger. Over the moonlit campfire, these two get a chance to chat and bond with each other. Their ultimate fate will depend on their relationship with their allies.

  

 

 

 

  • $12,000 - More Detailed Pixel Assets: With a bigger budget, we can afford more frames for smoother unit animations.
  • $15,000 - Additional Developer: Possessions has a lot of features to polish.  A second developer, even temporarily, would free some resources for writing and administrative tasks, resulting in more frequent and higher quality updates.
  • $18,000 - Advanced Security Audit: When you run an online service, being hacked is a detriment to every player.  We have security measures in place now, but we want to do our best to protect ANY personal information you give us.
  • $21,000 - Offline Mobile Version: We will develop a mobile version two episodes behind the current episode that you can play offline.  Decisions in the offline version will not be recorded.  (Note: The Offline Mobile Version will be developed even without hitting the stretch goal.  The web service will eventually shut down after completing the final episode, leaving behind a completed offline version.  Without stretch goal funding, development of the offline version will only begin when the entire game is finished.)

Any funds leftover will go towards developing the next episode.

Risks and challenges

Slow Development Speed

Possessions currently only has one full-time developer. This puts constraints on the amount of time required to complete and test features. Additional funding to hire more developers would speed up the rate of new content and features until the engine is in a polished state.

Unpredictable Timetable

Since Possessions relies on independent artists, the time between updates may not be consistent. Unforeseen consequences can delays, delaying the ultimate completion of the game.

Cost to Upkeep

Unlike other RPGs and visual novels, we are hosting the game on our own servers. This gives us an additional monthly cost that can vary significantly. This can be alleviated by sales profits and donations, but we may need to resort to advertising revenue as well.

Running out of Funds

In the event we run out of funds during development, we will open a Patreon for donations. If we can't get enough donations, we will still continue to develop Possessions on our own funds but the update rate will slow down significantly.
