About this project

This is a photo project by the Butler Art Center in Butler, Pa. Butler was once a thriving steel and heavy industry town. The largest manufacturer, Pullman Standard, left many years ago and the remaining large employer, Armco Steel merged with another company and is now AK Steel. Employment is half of what it was 30 years ago. The photos we want to display will be printed from 4x5 negatives, matted, and framed. The negatives were about to be tossed out and were rescued at the last moment. After looking at thousands of negatives we have chosen approximately 150 that we feel represent the scrap drive that took place in Butler during WWII and the 1940's era.

These negatives are 75 years old and show a small community coming together for a common cause: a scrap drive! The great thing about this scrap drive is that kids, women, and men all pitched in. Old men driving horse drawn wagons brought in scrap metal. Young boys combed neighborhoods looking for scrap. The photos include shots of Armco Steel which melted down the collected scrap and photos of employees holding parades, young military men and women in uniform attending a local dance with their beaus, and many shots of local citizens. Wonderful photos depicting a different time and place.

We are having the first show at the Butler Art Center. We feel it will attract a large audience as there will be many photos showing local residents. We are positive many will be recognized by their younger relatives. One reason for creating this project is to show our current residents including our younger generation how an entire community came together to help win the war. I feel this will be an important record of that time and why I call it "We made America Great!"

Each 4" x 5" negative will be printed in black and white on 12" x 16" paper, matted, and displayed in a 16" x 20" frame. The prints will be done very professionally. We want to continue showing the prints in different venues including local American Legions, VFW's and in the halls of our local city hall. We will also invite other organizations to display our show. We are not seeking to make a profit but to be able to pay for the cost of producing it and to continue to show it as much as possible.

I am the Manager of the Butler Art Center and President of the Board of Directors. I am leading this project with the help of other volunteers at the Art Center. I was recently in charge of a project for our local Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival where I created and produced 5 limited edition prints, one each year for 5 years. Each print has sold out.

I have been the manager of the Art Center for about 5 years and have seen the Center grow with new members, classes, band nights, and more. We are an all volunteer staff and we pay our bills by charging fees for various classes and events. We are able to break even most months with a monthly overhead of about $1800. If you invest in this important project I personally guarantee its completion and each investor will receive a matted print as a small token of our appreciation.

Risks and challenges

We don't see any problem with completing the project. We are confident the photos are in the 'public domain'. The company whose staff photographer took the photos is no longer in business and the company that bought them out discarded them, and has given permission to use.
