Jonathan: we considered the square/triangle idea too. My largest concern with this format would be that multiple players would/could gang up on a single player and eliminate them from the game.
Cool idea! I was going to try a different free-for-all variant, where each player has their own castle, with a road leading in to the center (like a "Y" or "X", depending on how many players you have), resulting in a giant battle-royale in the middle.
Alternatively, I was thinking of having a separate road leading to each neighbor (like a triangle or square, depending on the number of players you have).
