About the project:
"The Paleozoic" is a series of five illustrated accordion books about the era before the dinosaurs. Starting from the Cambrian explosion to the Permian's great dying, the books explain the major events and evolutionary milestones of each period in plain language. Illustrated and written over the course of 5 years by Estrella Vega, this series was originally silkscreen printed and handbound in very small editions. This Kickstarter's goal is to raise funds to offset print 500 sets of this 5 book series (for 2500 books total) so as to make them affordable and available to a greater audience.
The inspiration for this project came from the realization that most people don't know what preceded the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs, because they were huge and fearsome looking animals, dominate our idea of prehistoric life. Though the Paleozoic doesn't boast huge animals (with a few exceptions), it nonetheless laid the foundation of our modern world: from establishing the basic body plans of all existing life forms, to creating the coal deposits that fueled our industrial revolution. Through this series, I hope to demystify the events and life forms of that era to the lay person.
Each book will have an embossed hardcover and measure 4.75 inches wide by 6 inches tall. The accordions unfold to a 108-inch long illustration. Each accordion illustration flows into the next to make one mega picture measuring 42 feet. The accordions fit into a pocket on the inside covers and can be detached to be used as wall art.
Book 1: The Cambrian – The beginnings of complex life on Earth
Book 2: The Ordovician and the Silurian – Evolutionary radiation of species, and the first major mass extinction takes place
Book 3: The Devonian – life transitions to terrestrial habitats
Book 4: The Carboniferous – The first amniotes (or reptiles) appear as vast swamps cover the Earth.
Book 5: The Permian – mammal-like reptiles evolve and eruptions cause the worst mass extinction in history.
The offset printed books: You can either receive one or all five books in the series. Each accordion book is printed on the front and back. The front will have the artwork, and the back contains the text and other relevant information about each period. One book (of your choice) is available for the $25 backers. All five books are available to the $50, $80, $110, $150, $200 backers.
Two digital wallpaper pictures: depicting the famous animals of all the Paleozoic periods in one picture, they measure 1920x1080 / 1080x1920. All backers receive these pictures.
5x7 trifold postcard:. This postcard measures about 14.75 inches by 5 inches unfolded. It compresses 300 million years of Paleozoic life in three panels. This reward is available to $10, $110, $150 and $200 backers
Ammonoid soft enamel pin. Measuring1.25inch, it depicts an ancestor to modern-day squid and octopus that first appeared in the Devonian. This reward is available to $10, $80, $110, $150 and $200 backers
Glow-in-the-dark T-shirt: Offwhite Gildan t-shirts with a design that glows in the dark for up to an hour. Comes in small, medium, large and extra large. This reward is available to $25, $80, $110, $150, $200 backers
Opabinia pillow. This odd little creature, called Opabinia and dating from the Cambrian, is one of the only animals to have ever had five eyes. Now in pillow form, measuring about 10.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, each pillow is silkscreen printed handmade (and therefore there are slight variations in the cut and color of the pillow. The black ink also glows in the dark. This reward is available to $80, $110, $150 and $200 backers
Tree of life print: Silkscreen print measuring 22 inches by 30 inches and printed on Stonehenge printmaking paper. It shows the evolutionary relationships between current lifeforms (with an emphasis on vertebrates). This reward is available to $110, $150, $200 backers.
Silkscreen books: The original books that spawned this project. They're handmade, hardbound and silkscreen printed with 6 colors on the front and 1 color on the back. Signed by the artist. Each $200 backer gets two silkscreened books in the series.
Risks and challenges
The artwork and text are complete, and I have contacted a printer for the project. They have given me an estimate of two months for production and delivery of the books once files are submitted. However, there could be delays in production and shipping and I will keep backers updated on the progress of the printing.
The biggest risk comes from reward fulfillment. To keep rewards costs low, I plan to produce most of the rewards by myself (alongside other helpers) which could push my delivery dates off by a month.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
