No Borders Orchestra (NBO) stands for…
unity in diversity,
tolerance and togetherness in the Balkans and beyond.
In the region at the very heart of Europe that has for decades stood for crisis, conflict and divisiveness, there is a group of young people that embodies a different story. Their passion is togetherness, their bond is friendship, their language is music. No Borders Orchestra is their story!
As we see every day in the news, what is happening in the Balkans is happening in the world: that is why NBO’s impact is not regional, its reach is universal!
To spread their powerful message, No Borders Orchestra is establishing the annual Balkan Season tour in the region. This year with concerts in Budva - Montenegro; Prizren - Kosovo; Sarajevo – Bosnia and Herzegovina; Belgrade – Serbia.
No Borders Orchestra is inviting you to be part of its endeavour to sustain peace and togetherness. With your support, we can be a voice for the change we want to see in the world.
No Borders Orchestra (NBO) is a symphony orchestra made up of the best professional musicians from every country, religious and ethnic group of the former Yugoslavia, founded by Belgrade born, Berlin based conductor Premil Petrović.
NBO grew out of the desire to create a regional cross-border symphony orchestra of the Western Balkans, one that delivers the highest artistic quality and calls for a new kind of communication. The NBO project rests on two main foundations: music and society. All NBO performances successfully balance musical excellence with a comprehensive awareness of society.
Established in 2012 in both Belgrade and Berlin, NBO is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to empower active citizenship through politically and socially committed artistic and cultural projects. Its goal is to initiate change and social development through the power of reconciliation and creative collaboration. By seeking ways to deconstruct and transform communities, by advocating positive change and by engaging societies to become more inclusive, intercultural, democratic and open, NBO serves as a platform for change and for overcoming nationalism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and the bloody legacy of the past in the Western Balkan region.
NBO proved very successful in its first five years: numerous concerts at the leading festivals in the Balkan region, as well as touring and receiving rave reviews at Wiener Festwochen in Vienna, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, Festival d`Automne in Paris, Operadagen in Rotterdam, Festival de Marseille, Brisbane Festival, Festival in Gwangju, Macao Arts Festival as well as in Barbican in London, Kampnagel in Hamburg, Radialsystem in Berlin, Megaron in Athens, Lisbon, Toulouse, Strasbourg etc.
NBO has signed exclusive recording agreement with Universal Music with the first album "The Opening" being released under the Deutsche Grammophon brand in March 2015.
No Borders Orchestra has a long-term mission, which is to contribute to the process of cultural and artistic revitalization of unfortunately heavily marginalized culture in the Balkans. Hence, every year the orchestra performs several new programs at festivals in the region of former Yugoslavia as well as in other cultural capitals of Europe. This summer, NBO is planning a summer tour called The Balkan Season 2018, to be held in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo in August 2018, with the first concert to be held in Budva (Montenegro) on August 17.
Regarding the specific expenditure that the kickstarter funds would cover, we propose the following: overall tour production, transportation and upfront rehearsal costs that will enable the four concerts in Budva, Prizren, Sarajevo and Belgrade to take place. So far the orchestra has been funded through short-term financial assistance from people and organizations of good will, and with its own resources. This is the first time that NBO is using a crowdfunding platform for raising funds that are planned to cover the expenses for the orchestra's rehearsals and logistical support within the upcoming Balkan Season Tour 2018. Although the organizers will cover the majority of costs, we still lack resources to add to the overall tour production, transportation and upfront rehearsal costs that will enable the four concerts in Budva, Prizren, Sarajevo and Belgrade to take place.
We are therefore inviting everyone who likes our project and who, like us, believes that we can make difference and bring people together through music and by promoting the social change (but also inspire others to commence and carry on with the similar initiatives) to contribute as much as they can, or at least invite others to learn about our mission at www.nobordersorchestra.org.
Risks and challenges
