What is Safari Adventures??

Safari Adventures is an interactive, 3D board game with a target audience aimed at families. Each person will have a coloured jeep like car piece to travel around the board with, having 4 players maximum. The game is aged at children aged 4+ and will have CE approval. The aim is to collect slots of animals and aspects of their natural habitat as you go around the board to successfully build your own conservational safari park around the outside of the board itself, whilst also landing on ‘Pick a Paw’ cards. These include little bonuses or forfeits, e.g. ‘Elephants in the road. Oh no! Miss a go!’. As you go around the board you will land on the animals in their enclosures and as this happens you are able to collect a slot / a piece / part of that animal for your safari. Each player all has their own paw print board to create their safari onto on their corner of the board game and each one will be a different colour, matching the colours of the jeep game pieces.

The aim of my game is to encourage children to become more interactive and social and encourage each other to build their best safari in the quickest time before everyone else. I would also like to raise awareness of conservation and keeping animals safe in their natural habitat's in safari's. The idea is to take these animals from a zoo environment and release them to be free in the wild / safari.

Wildlife Conservation

- Wildlife conservation is the practice of protecting animal species and their habitats.

The board and most of the pieces are made from recyclable materials, as it is based on the environment / nature. The board, animals and habitats will be made from 'foamex' which is a recyclable material. What better way to represent the beauty of nature, than to build my game from environmentally friendly materials! The pieces to collect are slot pieces that you fit together to create your own safari adventure. I have chosen to use 5 animals – Giraffe, Zebra, Monkey, Elephant and a Lion. Also, I have included 5 items – Tree, Long Grass, Bush, Giraffe house and a watering hole. This will involve using a die cutting, foamex cut outs, sculpture, resin and silicone moulds for the jeeps and my hands.

In terms of packaging, mainly everything will be flat packed so the board game is easier and cheaper to ship. The game will be delivered to you early in the new year of 2020 (latest) as it gives me time to get the board produced professionally, to an exceptional standard.

The two images below illustrate the two 'How To Play' cards that come included in the game itself, explaining rules and instructions of Safari Adventures.

Not only is this game interactive, but I have personally designed the board game itself to look quite like a zoo enclosure, with the map to follow and animals locked away in their cages. The idea of my game is to land on animals and their habitats and collect them as you go around the board. When you have collected the animals and items, you are then able to take them out from the zoo enclosure and release them into the wild, into your own conservational, safari park. I have tried to make this a fun, educational game for children and to teach them about the conservation of animals and how nature is important and needs saving. We need to protect the species and keep our planet beautiful.

The conservation of animals ensures that famous species, for example, elephants and lions are secured and safe in the wild and this is what you get the chance to do within my Safari Adventures game.

Personally, I have a love for nature and animals and have been inspired to create this game as I have never seen a board game quite like this. Aren't you excited to release the animals into their wild, natural environments / habitats? I know I am!

When supporting Safari Adventures, you don't personally need to pledge onto a reward, you can still pledge any amount of money towards it! Anything will help, no matter how small!

Within my reward process, I have created a bundle of fun creations, the board game on it's own and other bigger bundles including the Safari Adventures board game, plus a few other pieces of work and sculpture. Parts of my rewards include...

SAFARI ADVENTURES ITSELF

As part of the reward process, I have decided to include a copy of the Safari Adventures game on it's own as people might only want to pledge for the game and not receive other items. This gives you the chance to receive your own copy of the game!

LIMITED EDITION SCREENPRINTS

When creating illustrations for the animals of my game, I attended an all-day workshop for screen printing and have found a love for it. So, for one of my rewards, you could have the chance to receive one of my limited edition screen prints based on the animals of my game. These images below illustrate the style I will use for my prints, having the outline of the animals in black and the colour slightly off the lines to make it more effective and give it depth. I believe having the colour slightly to the side makes it more quirky! Each print will be printed onto white a5 card. I will be creating 50 screen prints, having 10 of each animal of my game. These include a Monkey, a Giraffe, a Lion, a Zebra or an Elephant. These screen prints will be sent at random for the ultimate surprise!

LIMITED EDITION SCULPTURES

When developing the childlike character design for my game, I originally thought of creating each of my animals out of clay and experimented making the jeep like sculptures too. I baked them in the oven and after painted them using acrylic paint. However, as I wanted my game to be interactive, I decided to make the slot animals / habitats instead. I believed these little sculptures would be a fun, 3D addition to the reward process.

These little cartoon sculptures will be a part of my bundle rewards. I will create 25 of these in total, having 5 of each animal, e.g. a monkey, a giraffe, a lion, a zebra and an elephant. They will be selected and sent at random within each bundle. They will also be neater when painted.

YOUR OWN JEEP - LIKE SCULPTURE & PERSONALISED NUMBERPLATE

Another reward you could receive is your own bigger jeep-like sculpture (inspired by the mini car game pieces). I have decided to make 25 limited edition sculptures and will paint them using acrylic paint. They will be neater than the ones in the images as below I have created quick prototypes. These will be involved in my bundles in the reward process.

What makes these sculptures even more special is that you get the chance to choose your own colour and create your own personalised number plate for it! In order to personalise your car and numberplate, please simply message me the colour and the plate. There are only 25 up for grabs so get pledging!

CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATIVE POSTCARDS

After designing the animals and habitats for my game, I decided to experiment creating postcard designs. I believe postcards would be a good reward as I am able to write personal messages on the backs of them, thanking people for supporting my project, Safari Adventures. I have created 50 postcards in total, having 10 of each animal, as shown below.

I will get my postcards professionally printed with a glossy laminate finish with my signature located on the bottom. I hope you and the kids like them!

As you can see on the illustrative image below, I have left a space blank next to 'Dear', to personally write the pledgers name onto the postcard for more of a personal touch. I have also left space on the righthand side to stick a stamp and write the address.

Hi, I’m Cerys! Most people don’t know how to pronounce my name, so here’s some help… *ke-ris*. I’m a 21-year-old student from Coventry University, studying ‘Fine Art & Illustration’. So about me? What would you like to know??

Well… I have a huge passion for art and design. It’s what I’m best at and where my skills lie. I am the creative one in my family - that’s me! I’ve always had people telling me that ‘art isn’t a subject, it’s just a hobby’ and that ‘art won’t get you a job, there’s no future with it’. But I am going to prove them wrong and my Kick-Starter project will help me achieve that and get it out into the real world. One aspect I love about being in the creative industry and designing art, is the satisfying feelings of seeing the outcome of what I’ve created and come up with - it’s somewhat therapeutic.

Whilst at university, I’ve also had the chance to feature my work in ‘The Fold Exhibition’ at the Stryx Gallery, Birmingham. This was such a good experience, having people view my work in an actual exhibition environment and getting positive feedback. Not only was this a fun, engaging experience but it also gave me more confidence when producing work.

When thinking about my interests within art and design, I would usually say I’m best at acrylic painting, watercolours and sculpture. One thing I enjoy is biro work and using watercolours to compliment the drawing. When using colour within my work, I either like using it to the full extent with acrylic paint, adding shadows and depth but with watercolours I like to leave areas blank, creating a loose effect.  Luckily, ever since being at university, I’ve had the opportunity to use Adobe suite’s and my iPad Pro, which has widened my skills. These both gave me the illustrative freedom of digital drawing. I’ve received an accreditation in the universally recognized Adobe Illustrator software and this knowledge has helped massively within my work as I am able to work confidently with digital media now. I have gained a passion for drawing digitally on my iPad and quite like simple, line work and adding colours. From creating this project and creating a children’s book in the past, I have developed a love for children’s illustration. We will see where this next chapter takes me!

Another passion of mine within the art industry is, Photography! I love capturing the sights of buildings and nature around me and being able to edit them to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I will often use Lightroom, Photoshop or even my Photos app on my Macbook to edit my photos. I find taking photographs very therapeutic and have at least 15 memory cards full of photographs already! I suppose I like a few different things within the art industry. There’s just so many aspects to choose from.

Playing piano, guitar, ukulele, singing, photography and exploring places are things I enjoy doing in my spare time. I like to keep myself busy and productive and this project has definitely helped towards this!

THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO WATCH, READ AND SUPPORT SAFARI ADVENTURES! HAPPY PLEDGING!

Risks and challenges

As part of the production process of this board game, I will be in contact with many manufacturers and companies to get my finished product professionally printed. There is always a slight chance that something could go wrong or that something wasn’t executed properly so I will need to allow for the timings of this as it could delay the shipping. There shouldn’t be a huge risk of this as I will communicate thoroughly and effectively with the companies so that everything is understood. Overall, I will try my best to ensure it doesn’t happen but I am writing this, just in case.

In addition, as some of my rewards include personalisation of products and getting in touch with the backer, I will need to allow time for this to happen. Some of my rewards will take longer than others to create, for example, the postcards will be easier to ship as I can just send them off with the daily post, whereas, the board game will take a little while longer.

In addition, due to the hazards and safety rules and regulations of my game, I will need to apply for CE approval and this could take a while for all paperwork and applications to be completed and approved of. This could delay the process so I have set the delivery date of my board game to be early in the new year of 2020 to allow time for this to happen.

When creating this project, I decided to produce 100 board games, due to it being my first ever live project and the timescale given. I have been in contact with many different manufacturers and found that typical board game manufacturers have an MOQ of about 1000, which means the cost effectiveness for the games is good. However, as my project only involves 100 games, I've come to the realisation that my board game is quite expensive compared to others. If I were to produce this further, the overall cost would be cheaper.

When creating my board game, I researched into children's illustrations, children's books and different styles that would match my target audience of the ages 4+. Although the game is aimed at families, I think it would be of more interest to children, due to the interactiveness and educational aspect of the game. To make sure it was age appropriate, I have tested the game on a few children, with consent from adults and had positive feedback on the age appropriateness of my board game.
