About this project
Tolkien spoke of a secret fire. I believe that we all have something in us that when roused, enables us to make real the dreams we imagine. Music is the greatest gift man shares with the universe, and the fire to create something musical has been ignited in me. It's been a long time since I've stepped into a recording studio… too long. Join me and These Grey Men from the beginning. Share in the process, and be a part of the inspiration behind this collection of re-imagined cover songs, and live performances to follow!
About two years ago, I began to feel somewhat incomplete. I was touring and having a great time with my friends in System Of A Down, but something was missing. After some soul searching, it hit me that I hadn't given anything new artistically to the world in far too long. Though touring was fantastic, it didn't fulfill a fundamental need that was growing day by day within me. A need to step into the studio with a blank canvas and share what comes out with fans across the world.
On one of my many trips to visit friends and family in LA, I was scrolling through the 10,000 or so songs in my iPod, and as different songs would come on - for reasons I can't explain - I would rearrange them and change the melodies around in my head. I began noting the songs that changed the most profoundly, and a list began to form. Over time, it became clear that what I had on my hands could be the project I was yearning for.
Enter Mr. James Hazley, my close friend and co-conspirator since high school, who also happens to posses a wealth of musical talent. A close friend for decades as well as former drummer for critically acclaimed underground band Cockeyed Ghost, James brings to the project his vast knowledge of music, songwriting and producing. Also feeling a bit dejected musically, James was ready for the challenge I presented him: to take songs and completely re-imagine them, while maintaining their original integrity. We took some risks with these songs. We pushed boundaries. We pushed ourselves. I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoy making it for you!
The album will cover a range of songs from artists such as Radiohead and Outkast to David Bowie, and will include an all-star band that we're in the process of developing now. For this project, lots of different styles are going to be Incorporated, especially drum-wise. The sound is going to be rock-derivative, and will also include some hip-hop songs explored through the lens of rock. There are no limitations artistically for this project.
I want this project to be an experiment, not just in sound, but in the mutual participation of artist and fan. I want to involve you from the very beginning, not simply in contributing to the financing of this project, but in truly being a part of the process of the creation of the project. The ultimate goal is not just to deliver to you a finished product, but to give you a piece of the project every step of the way.
Many of the rewards that you see to the right were designed to allow and encourage you to be involved in the process, from interacting with us over the phone or in person, coming into the studio with us via Skype, owning parts of instruments that were used during the recoding process, being involved in creating our merchandise and coming out to see us when we tour. I want you to be as invested in this project as I am... kind of like planting a tree and watching it grow. Everyone who makes a contribution of $10 or more will receive a download of the album.
Throughout the lifetime of the project, we'll also provide you with real-time updates on artists who confirm their participation, as well as updates and content from rehearsals.
Breakdown of Cost
The recording process will cost upwards of $75,000 including engineer, recording space and equipment. Factoring in touring costs will also cause this number to grow substantially.
Because we are currently developing this project without the financial and marketing support of a record label, we are covering all of the expenses associated with this project out of pocket, which, as you see, can be quite costly. Knowing how expensive making and touring music can be, we've set our fundraising goal at what we believe to be an attainable $55,000. Any money that we're able to raise beyond that amount will thus also go into recording and touring costs.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk would be to not put ourselves out there creatively. Without risk, the world wouldn't enjoy some of the greatest accomplishments of man, and this includes music.
Raising enough money to record and tour a record is in and of itself, challenging, so I'd like to thank you for rising to the challenge with us, and for supporting this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
