About this project
I'm so excited! Thanks to your help, the original funding goal has been reached in only 4 days!!! Our community still needs your help! We have one bike rack funded, let's go for two! Pledges can still be made!
Dig In & Bike On is a public art project with the goal to place a bike rack where no bike rack has gone before ... in the downtown of Iron Mountain! Iron Mountain, Michigan (IMMI), located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula, is an area known for its mining history and rolling landscape. New bike paths are being created throughout our community, but we do not have bike racks in our downtown for our biking visitors. This project can be the remedy!
Early last year, I began working on bike rack designs with input from representatives from our local bike path committee and the downtown design committee. I met with Ronnie Bradke, a local metal fabricator, who became very excited about the project.
My goal for Dig In & Bike On, is to raise $970 so we can create a functional bike rack that depicts the shovel-pick-shovel design in the middle and the two endcaps. Creating this smaller version of the prototype will allow parking for 6 bicycles. As more funding is reached, the rack can be made longer and/or a second small one can be created, to be placed in another area of the downtown.
Ronnie is ready to begin working on the bike rack once we have the funding. Included in the $970 are labor costs, materials, supplies, and the rust colored powder coated finish.
The shovel-pick-shovel design is reminiscent of the mining days of our city and the mountain shaped end-caps denote Iron Mountain's rolling landscape. Also cut into the end-cap is the name of our city, Iron Mountain.
The bike rack will have three tools (shovel-pick-shovel) and the two end-caps; 6 bicycles will be able to be parked around this rack.
Postcards, stickers, posters, metal wall hangings and small prototypes are our rewards that I think you will really enjoy! Each reward is a reflection of this project and a way to show your support. When looking at the first image on the video, you see a bike at the top of a mountain, a mountain that is created by the letters, IMMI (Iron Mountain, Michigan). The rust color background of the posters and the postcards symbolize the rust from the iron ore of our area, while the white lettering of DIG IN & BIKE ON bridges our city's mining history to the present.
Risks and challenges
Much planning has been put into this project and I hope everything goes smoothly! In case I run into any delays or problems, I will keep my supporters in the loop! Dig In & Bike On!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
