Dia de los Muertos has always been a design inspiration for us. We feel no other holiday can match its pageantry and mystique, so it's fitting that our first Kickstarter campaign be an homage to this spiritual and cultural event.
With illustrations by David Edgerly - artist behind the successful Edgar Allan Poe Playing Cards Kickstarter project - we're representing Dia de los Muertos as it's celebrated today: full of color, detail and character.
The Card Back is ornately detailed but with a simple black and tarnished gold scheme that gives way to splashes of color from the Court Cards. We've added a weathered, parchment feel to the background in honor of Dia de los Muertos' historic roots.
The backers will have the chance to choose the fourth King in the deck, deciding between our "Priest" and "Artist" designs that we'll reveal as the campaign goes on.
We'll be using the United States Playing Card Company to print the deck and any subsequent decks that are unlocked throughout our campaign; we found Dia de los Muertos so rich in material that we decided to offer different decks through stretch goals. We hope you'll help us unlock them all.
The Black Deck - a black and white version of our main deck, with the red of the Hearts and Diamonds offering the one striking touch of color.
And the Painted Deck, a surrender to the explosion of color that embodies Dia de los Muertos design at its boldest.
For Add Ons, we'll be offering Official Dice, Coins, Shot Glasses and T-Shirts. And a special Limited Edition, Signed, Custom-Sealed Unbranded Painted Deck.
So, thanks for dropping by our page. We're beyond excited for this campaign, and over the next 35 days we hope to stay in constant communication with our backers so we can make this inaugural project a success!
Risks and challenges
We've spent months analyzing countless playing card campaigns to prepare ourselves. There will be no problem meeting the artwork deadline as David Edgerly, our resident illustrator, has quite a bit of experience getting work submitted on time - and for some very picky clients, as we can personally attest.
We plan on using Backerkit to communicate with all backers who sign up to make sure their pledges are fulfilled quickly and efficiently. As for fulfillment centers, we've narrowed our selection down to a couple of houses that have extensive experience with Kickstarter projects, and before campaign's end we'll choose the one that is best able to meet our (and your) needs.
As far as shipping goes, we try to be conservative in estimating costs, while not looking to make any profit for ourselves in the process. It's extremely difficult to know what each pledge will cost to fulfill, so we've tried to price in discounts throughout our pledge levels to pass on whatever savings to our backers we can.
We're also conservative in estimating a fulfillment date, so our August deadline is a goal that we should easily meet. But unexpected things do happen, so rest assured we'll be issuing steady post-campaign updates to keep everyone informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
