- What's the STORY?
In 1974, an American rock band called “The Crawl” is brought into the limelight by the false lover-like relationship between their lead singer Curt, and their guitarist Dorian. Curt starts to feel uncomfortable with his public life, as he starts to develop feelings for Dorian in real life. He struggles and tries to deny his own sexuality.
HE AND ROCK & ROLL is a 20-minute narrative short film. The story is completely fictional, but it’s sincerely a homage and a love letter to the 1970s rock culture.

- Who am I?
My name is Yilei Zhou. I'm from Shanghai, China. I’m 24 years old, currently studying film at Art Center College of Design, located in Pasadena, California. I’m about to graduate and get my Master degree in April 2016.
- Why HE AND ROCK & ROLL?
No one in my family listened to and talked about rock music until I started to do so in high school in 2007. Although I live in a world far away from the fascinating Glam Rock era, I've come to love it when I learned it in Bowie’s songs and movies like Velvet Goldmine. HE AND ROCK & ROLL is the film I’ve been dreaming to make. It’s pure passion and ambition.
- How did the production go?
I started to work on this story in the first year at Art Center, and kept revising it with my writing instructor Victoria Hochberg until I was ready to shoot in the second year, in March 2015.
The great filmmaking environment offered by Art Center empowered me to finish the pre-production and shooting smoothly. I was able to get insightful advices from my professors, equipments I need from school, and great actors from our casting workshop, not to mention the skilled crew who are also my fellow schoolmates.
- How's it going financially?
The pre-production and shooting of this film cost me $15000, which is the tuition payment for a term at school provided by my parents. I decided to use this money on film production instead of tuition, and as a result I took “Lite Terms” at school instead of “Full Terms”. However, it’s difficult to move on to post-production with this strategy since the cost is greater than what I can save from tuition. That’s why I turn to Kickstarter for help.
Here’s a breakdown on the future use of the Kickstarter funding:
- What's the future of HE AND ROCK & ROLL?
My previous short film, called The Greatest Gift, which I wrote and directed in the first year in Art Center, won a BEST STUDENT FILM award in New York Los Angeles International Film Festival. In comparison, HE AND ROCK & ROLL is a huge step higher on production value in all aspects. I'm confident that it can go even further with sufficient help from Kickstarter. I'll bring HE AND ROCK & ROLL to more festivals and screenings all over the world, and in the end I'll release it online, accessible for everyone on earth!
