For the past few years, I have taken to drawing friendly monsters in my sketchbooks as a productive non-computer hobby. In 2018, I made a resolution to make these monsters wall-worthy – the Make 100 project on Kickstarter seemed like the perfect opportunity to get these monsters out of my sketchbooks on onto walls!
The funds I raise will go towards art supplies, frames, packaging costs, sticker printing, and something for me to sip on while I work.
About the Monsters
I generally don't plan out how each monster will look before I start creating it. Some of them have more human characteristics, like teeth, two eyes, and human noses, while others have strange, hose-like noses and a non-human number of eyes.
The monsters are always a non-skin color like red, blue, green, or orange. Most of the portraits are just the monster's head on a white background, but occasionally they appear in a meadow-like, blue-sky landscape.
Traditionally, the monsters' medium has been colored pencil, but I would like to explore acrylic paints in this undertaking. Here is a monster painted in acrylic:
Unlike colored pencil monsters, the acrylic monsters generally start as sketches. Here is an in-progress acrylic monster that began with a pencil sketch:
The 100 monsters will be 8x10 monster portraits, some on acrylic paint on board and some colored pencil on paper. I also have a digitized monster or two that will be available as stickers, and can also create some hand-drawn, adorable monster greeting cards for a lesser cost!
These monsters are perfect artwork for your bathroom, your kid's room, or really any room!
Risks and challenges
I will have to create a lot of monsters - 100 to be exact - for this project to be a success! Each and every monster looks a little bit different, so there's no way to know exactly how the monster in your reward will look.
Also, creating monsters takes time, and they are a hobby for me. I tried to make the expected delivery dates for these monsters far into the future to ensure this project does not cause my hobby to become a source of stress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
