THiRDspace Stories is ELLAchattanooga's visual storytelling studio, and this is our first project. What better way to begin storytelling than with a quarterly graphic novel series! This first issue is 32 pages printed in comic book format and will include 2 stories: the first, a wordless story focused on fully visual storytelling and the second, a multilingual story. Both stories will be illustrated in a graphic novel style and written on a fourth grade reading level. We are publishing this first issue as a pilot and as the first step toward a 90 page quarterly graphic novel series. So we are working at the pace we plan to work for future issues.
Our stories are written, our characters are coming to life through illustration.
We will be updating this section of the Kickstarter as illustrations and pages are approved so that you can share in the excitement of the journey with us.
Issue 1 is scheduled to be sent to the printer the last week of March.
2000 copies of Issue 1 will be released in FIVE Chattanooga area elementary schools the week of April 16th, 2018. This is the week following the East Lake Book Fiesta where we will have a presentation on visual literacy and cultural linguistics.
We want all our students to fall in love with reading. Comic books and graphic novels are a great bridge between picture books and novels. In our neighborhood less than 42% of our elementary students read on grade level. THiRDspace Stories seeks to create a conversation about the importance of visual literacy, especially among English Language Learners, while giving students opportunities to connect across cultural boundaries by sharing stories.
The visual story embodies the struggles of children who live in various states of fear. Using a combination of grayscale and color we will follow Roberto and Araceli, adorned in armor inspired by Latin American folklore, on an adventure through our local park where they work together to defeat an evil that is ever lurking in the shadows.
Our multilingual story introduces us to Aniyah on her journey of self discovery as a storyteller, as she exists in a world filled with diverse languages.
THiRDspace is creating positive change and enhancing the unique cultural diversity of the East Lake Chattanooga community and greater Chattanooga area – thereby reducing the harmful impact of negative stereotypes and negative cultural assumptions.

Inspiration has come as we’ve read and curated our ELLA Library for our community since 2015. Giving out thousands of books to local children we realized the lack of stories that resembled and valued culture and community similar to our own.
Our own children and their love for graphic novels gave us the genre as our budding aspiring readers followed along caught up in stories even though they could not yet read the words.
Inspiration also came from local families who have home languages other than English and lack books to enjoy together. It is common for children, parents, and grandparents to have different languages and levels of literacy.
We are artist, writers, moms, neighbors, and teachers. ELLAchattanooga grew out of in home preschool reading groups and became an LLC in 2015 to facilitate art and language in the East Lake Chattanooga, TN neighborhood. With a skill and passion for teaching, art, stories, and culture ELLAchattanooga knew that we wanted to be a place where art and language intersect and form relationships.
Our favorite day and annual event East Lake Book Fiesta brings books to life through large artistic interpretations of the illustrations from book and lively book readings. Book fiesta is a celebration of the diversity of Chattanooga and taking the question of how play can make it a stronger city and giving it feet.
Because we believe in the power of amazing stories we curate a library of excellent stories, bilingual stories, books highlighting people of color, books that help kids understand their own experiences, and books that help them enter into one another's experiences.
We believe that it is extremely important that our children are exposed to quality art in their formative years. ELLAchattanooga writes and contributes curriculums of literacy based art lessons to support the planning and implementing of art education in our local elementary school, after school programs, summer camps, and preschool programs.

Risks and challenges
The scripts are written, the artist have started, the US based printer has been selected, we have eager envelope stuffers. Our biggest risk is funding! We need to ensure that we have enough money to pay our talented artists and the printer so we can offer this book to our students and backers.
We can't do this without your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
