Goliath CNC - An Autonomous Robotic Machine Tool for Makers

Goliath comes with a patented sensor system, which triangulates the position of the robot.
Thanks to radio frequency communication, the sensors continuously update the position of Goliath relative to the work area, 100 times a second. This feature ensures the target accuracy of 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) which:
1. Enables the robot to understand its position, so that the sensors can correct the route in case of loss of traction of the wheels.
2. Define the work area of Goliath
Goliath mode of operation starts cutting all the profiles, since they don’t affect the motion of Goliath. The robot then carves out pockets or drills large holes. Goliath then carves out pockets beginning from one corner on the top and then moving backwards (as you can see in the video) to avoid falling into what it has carved.
The change of orientation feature allows Goliath to easily navigate till the edge of the panel to work. In such a way you can place the drawing wherever you like, in order to reduce the waste of material.
Goliath also comes with two panel extensions, whose purpose is to enable Goliath to reach also the very end of the corner.
Goliath can calibrate the zero of the Z axis autonomously, thanks to its embedded sensors.
With Goliath you have the freedom to let your imagination run wild with a variety of materials to create furniture, skateboards, signage, and many more.

Traditional CNC machines are large, bulky, and stationary tools with physical limitations that hinder the creative capacity of many creators and makers whose ideas are larger than the small workspaces they are confined to. Goliath is the ideal solution for makers looking to create at scale.
From Surfboards, Furniture, Boat fabrication and Home improvement, Goliath CNC leaves it’s mark far beyond the tabletop in you favorite coworking or woodworking shop.
Goliath was designed to be a fabrication tool that crosses the boundaries that many cnc machine manufacturers abide by.
Goliath’s integrated sensor hardware and CNC technology communicates 100 times per second with the device to cover work area as large as 9.8 x 8.5ft (3x2.5m) without running the risk of moving outside of its predetermined work area.
Many CNC machines require you to physically reposition the the machine or workpiece in order to drill more complicated shapes. With integrated omni directional wheels, Goliath can navigate the surface of a workpiece with accuracy.
The omnidirectional three-module wheel design, ensures that two rollers are always in contact with the panel. In so doing, Goliath's movement isn’t affected by grooves or profiles that have already been cut, because at least one roller is always in contact with the panel.
The majority of dust and debris is pushed aside or rolled over by Goliath's omnidirectional wheels.
We have put Goliath CNC through testing to confirm that this does not affect the precision of the robot.
Large scale projects such as carpentry, scenic art, interior decoration, fairs and stand sector, etc. require additional space for cutting out big pieces with exact measurements.
If your table top is not large enough to work on, Goliath is as flexible as you are! Simply place your material of choice on the ground, set the pillar sensors and let Goliath take care of the rest.
Unlike most bulky and expensive CNC machines, Goliath has a smaller footprint than most competitors with physical dimensions of 15.75 x 15.75 x 11.82 in (LxWxH) for easy storage.
Working on a tight deadline and the woodshop closes soon? Goliath weighs only 22lbs and comes with built-in handles so you can easily store or take Goliath with you to your next location to continue working.

No only is Goliath versatile in terms of materials and file types, it is also capable of supporting a variety of mill bits such as the:
- Single flute mill bit: all round mill bit for woodworking.
- Positive/negative mill bit: for achieving the best finish on top and bottom panel surfaces.
- Single flute plexiglass mill bit: optimized for better finishing on acrylic.
- Single flute aluminum mill bit: optimized spiral angle for aluminum working.
Goliath features a host of features including 0.1mm point of accuracy, Pillars that define Goliath’s work area, and project route correction.
Goliath supports the automation of your projects with increased accuracy all while keeping safe and out of harm’s way.
Goliath’s software communicates 100 times per second with Goliath effectively reducing the amount of latency between the machine and sensors.
Our patented sensors also can autocorrect Goliath’s drilling route just in case it experiences slipping or nodes in the wood or other materials it is cutting.
Goliath’s Radio Frequency features increase the communication between the robot and sensors for seamless integration through Wi-Fi connectivity so you can monitor and control Goliath without having to do so manually.
For added protection Goliath comes with a transparent plastic cover to shield users from the automated drill bit and debris created while Goliath drills a maximum of 1.3 inches through wood, aluminum, plastic and other materials.

Risks and challenges
MANUFACTURING & SUPPLY CHAIN
Dealing with hardware it’s always a hard challenge, and the transition from prototype to mass production is probably even harder. Goliath CNC is a complex product that will require us to work with many suppliers. During the last six months, we had the chance to visit and meet with different companies from Italy, USA, and China in order to start building a network of experts in the supply chain for this crowdfunding project. We are currently comparing different solutions and with your support, we will be able to finalize our decision on a supplier in the coming weeks.
We are working to secure strategic partnerships in the development and supplying of specific components for Goliath CNC, most importantly, the router. We have been contacted by many and we are currently in touch with a big player in the power tools/DIY/woodworking market but we have not solidified any partnerships as of yet.
Goliath CNC’s software still needs development, today we are using an off-the-shelf CAM software to generate the path and make the CNC robot work. The main challenge will be the G-code generation and the development of a customized algorithm to optimize the movements, of course with an intuitive workflow and great user experience. The software development process will begin after the campaign and will run in parallel with our manufacturing process.
