In a Victorian world of Gears and Ghosts a handful of heroes stand like beacons of hope in the darkness.
'Arthur Shilling: Paranormal Adventurer and Gentleman Engineer'
Issue #1 ‘Vs. The Newlyn Nightmare’
What we want to achieve with this campaign is to fund the printing of the first issue of our new ongoing comic series Arthur Shilling.
Issue one will be twenty-eight pages long and will contain two stories. The first is Arthur Shilling versus the Newlyn Nightmare; a classic comic book story. The second is The Innocent Heart starring Dr Beckett; a written story with illustrations. Both characters inhabit the same world, an alternative history which combines steampunk with the paranormal and occult. This comic is hoped to be the first issue of an ongoing series and these stories are an introduction to both characters.
Arthur Shilling’s world is populated by both historical and fictional figures. So be prepared for a brush with Brunel or dinner with Dracula.
Arthur Shilling can be summed up in four words and an ampersand: Paranormal adventurer & gentleman engineer. Short, sweet and to the point, just like his sidekick. Born and raised in the mid 1800s, Arthur Shilling trained as an engineer but was thrust into the world of the occult during his time at university. He now spends his days tinkering with technology and his nights sparring with spectres.
Doctor Michael Beckett, occult investigator and student of Professor Van Helsing. After suffering a life changing injury at the hands of The Red Bride, he is now known as the foremost specialist in preternatural occurrences. First master of Bartitsu, Beckett honed his body to the peak of human performance. He has dedicated his life to stalking those that stalk the night.
Stretch Goals -
At £1500 we want to pay the people who are working on this project for free, the artists and the letter. These people are putting so much time and energy into this project to make it a success and to be ready on time that we wouldn't have dreamed of a September deadline without them.
We understand that we need to offer an incentive into this goal level so both Chris' are going to write the origin story for their respective characters. Chris Nicholls will delve into the realm of the occult to explain how Arthur Shilling became a Paranormal Adventurer. Chris Fisher will tell a tale of Dr Beckett in an epic battle for his life and explain the reason for his mysterious scarf. This will be available to all the people who have pledged or buy a comic via download.
This is how the money we raise will be spent.
When we say ‘Advertising’ we are talking about an event we are holding in Plymouth to promote both the comic’s launch and this campaign. Check it out here on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/505141302886485/
-The people behind the comic.
-Chris Nicholls – Creator and author of Arthur Shilling, Chris spends his life in comic book t-shirts and odd socks. The concept for Arthur Shilling was born whilst painting his bathroom a worrying shade of crimson.
-Chris Fisher – Associate writer and creator of Dr Michael Beckett, this Chris emigrated to the South West as a result of his marriage and came up with the concept for Dr Beckett on the way to Wrestle Mania.
-Rob Cross – Lead artist and Plymouth College of Art and Design alumni, Rob isn’t a Steampunker but does wear a hat with goggles on. He’s been doing this for money, so we’re lucky to have him working with us.
-Steve May – Cover artist and freelance pen and inker, Steve has been selling his unique style art on the convention circuit in the South West for many years now. This isn’t Steve’s first cover, and it won’t be his last!
-Emily King- From deepest darkest Cornwall, Emily answered our call for a letterer as if swinging from a batline to the roof of the GCPD. Emily’s creative body is varied and vast, from podcaster to comic writer she has left a notable footprint on the intertubes and in nerd culture.
-The future –
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the first print run and sales opportunities for issue one. That means that, as a company, once we have sold the initial stock we will be in a position to re-print and also look towards creating and releasing more issues, hopefully in time for Christmas. We have plenty of ambitions for the future such as more adventures featuring Arthur Shilling and Dr Beckett, and ‘The Penny Dreadfuls’, an ongoing series of illustrated short stories.
Risks and challenges
The scripts are written and in the final stages of editing. The initial artwork is complete and all we are waiting on is the finished panels before we go to press. This is our major challenge, to get this work finished and construct the comic in time to get to the printers for the release deadline of the 21st of September. This will be overcome by my innate ability to nag at Rob, the artist. If it does become a problem then we can push the launch back to October and the ‘22 Panels’ convention in Falmouth and still get the comics to pledgers by October.
We believe in this project so much we have already spent our own money but we need this campaign to see it through. We cannot fund it alone so we need this to be a success.
This is our first comic and of course there are going to be unseen problems. But we have a support structure of graphic designers and people who have already released comics that we call upon for advice.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
