Welcome all to our Kickstarter for issue one of The Resurrected; a dark sci-fi thriller set in a near future where the dead don’t always stay dead. We're all incredibly excited to inch a little closer to finally publishing the first issue in the series, and we want to thank all of you who have chosen to support our endeavor, even it that means simply sharing this page with your friends and followers.
Issue #1 Cover A by Crizam Zamora
Variant Cover by Ariela Kristantina & Bryan Valenza
The year is 2037, and the world, as we know it, has changed dramatically. Of all the colossal technological advancements of the age, the most significant came from Drexler Nanotech Corporation (DNC), who created a serum engineered to resurrect the dead. Facing ethical implications from worldwide condemnation, the serum was ultimately banned the world over.
This is the world that Cain Duluth, an Aboriginal-Australian detective, and Akimi Ozaki, his Japanese-American partner, live in. Working for the Special Division for the Resurrected (SDR) in Nova Lucis (the newly created United Nations city-state off the east coast of the United States), the SDR's mission is to pursue and permanently detain ‘Rezzies' (individuals who have been resurrected using the banned serum).
When investigating the brutal murder of a Rezzy, Cain and Akimi clash with DNC and its enigmatic CEO, Xander Calypse, and uncover a plot that will bring Cain's people to certain extinction.
In order to succeed, Cain must reconcile his past and overcome the loss of his family, victims of DNC's techno-plague.
The Resurrected is a full-colour series consisting of five 22 page issues. The creative team hails from across the globe, making this truly an international affair. The art for the first two issues is already completed. The next step is to print and distribute the first issue, which is where you guys come in. With your support, I can take pre-orders for the The Resurrected comic and merchandise and publish the first issue soon after.
Our goal of €3,000 will be to cover the printing, packing and shipping of The Resurrected issue one, as well as the additional Kickstarter rewards created. Also included are the fees that Kickstarter and Amazon take for using this service. If we go beyond our initial goal of €3,000, those funds will go towards the printing and publishing the remaining books in the series.

The Resurrected delves into dark social-political issues, most significantly those dealing with the colonisation of Australia and the treatment of the local Indigenous population.
One of the story’s main goals is to illustrate how the centuries' old invasion of Australia by England has had destructive and lasting effects on the Indigenous population. In addition, Indigenous-Australians are poorly represented in comics and media as a whole. When they are shown, the characters are often presented in an offensive manner. I'm happy to see some change in this, more recently with television shows like Cleverman that tackle the stereotypes and lack of representation that have been perpetuated. We aim to do the same with this series.
The story of The Resurrected is incredibly personal for Christian Carnouche, the writer of the series. The plight of Australia’s Indigenous population disturbs him, and he has a general feeling of anxiety about the rising wave of xenophobia that is sweeping the world. Although he is not Indigenous himself, he grew up in an area of Sydney with a large Indigenous population. He's witnessed the racism and prejudice that many Indigenous experience. Our aim is to increase global awareness of this situation. Here's a blog article that Christian wrote on this exact issue:
He also discussed Indigenous issues during a recent podcast appearance:

Cain Duluth: Cain is an Aboriginal-Australian detective and one of the world’s last surviving Australians after the population was obliterated during the techno-plague of 2032. Although Cain would do anything to get his family back, he is against the resurrection serum and similar nano-technologies, as they were responsible for the destruction of of his homeland. In the process, he'll learn about his heritage and what it means to be Aboriginal.
Xander Calypse: Xander is the enigmatic CEO of the all-powerful Drexler Nanotech Corporation, the company responsible for creating both the banned resurrection serum and the weaponised nanobots that destroyed Australia. Although DNC has been heavily criticised for its reckless development of certain technologies, it is credited with designing nano-technologies that have eliminated disease, famine and pollution. Xander is intensely driven and has little empathy for others. He would do absolutely anything to achieve his goals, but what does a man who is wealthy beyond belief still desire?
Akimi Ozaki: Akimi is Cain’s Japanese-American partner at the SDR. She's easy-going and laid back, balancing Cain's intensity. She was a detective with the LAPD before transferring to the UN city-state of Nova Lucis not long after the 2032 techno-terrorist attack. Akimi is dedicated to the word of the law and in contrast to her technophobe partner Cain, she has embraced the massive leaps in nanotechnology that have improved her chances of catching crooks. Although Cain’s rigidity often annoys her, Akimi has his back, no matter what.

Risks and challenges
Issues one and two are complete. The most significant obstacle we've identified is the potential cost of international shipping. The creators and our supporters are based all around the world - including the U.S, Australia, Europe and South America. We've recruited a fulfillment company that will be handling packing and shipping rewards to our supporters outside of The Netherlands.
Despite being a reputable company, there are always issues and risks that come up. I will do my best to minimise any potential delays and keep all backers updated with any and all problems that may come up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
