About

How tempus was created, details about the design, and instructions on how to play it at home!

Tempus is a family friendly, fun for everyone retro style card game created by a chemist and his girlfriend in Ohio. Players control time in forward and reverse directions by counting the hours of the clock. It's a family friendly card game, and fun for everyone.

We love card games because they're a great way for everyone to set down their phones for a while and have a friendly conversation with eachother.

Watch video for instructions on how to play Tempus™ at home, and try it for yourself!

About the case:

These are some photos of our prototype case. The full version will include a hinge and a latch, manufactured locally in Ohio!

 About the Cards:

These cards are pretty plain looking for a reason. We didn't want flashy graphics to distract from the raw geometry on display. We want kids to become very familiar with these angles

Creating the Game:

I created this game with the love of my life about 6 months ago through trial and error. We were playing an older game that was a little too slow and drawn out, so we started changing rules. Then after a few weeks and a ton of variations, as well as adding some cards from a different game, we had created something entirely our own. The game really created itself. We just looked at what we didn't care for, made adjustments, and tested it out.

We were addicted to this game and couldn't stop playing it for a month or two, which is we decided to break out the graph paper and create our own cards, and finally give it an official name!

First sketches
First sketches

First draft of our cards! Things changed a bit, as you can see.

The first name we gave the game was Time Warp, but the name was unavailable for trademark. In the end, we're much happier with Tempus™, because this name and it's logo is what really inspired us to give it an educational theme. Tempus™ is the Latin word for time, after all, which makes it even more fitting.

Case Sketches:

We're pretty happy with how our 3d printed prototype turned out. We were a little sad that we couldn't make a prototype with the hinge, but oh well. It will make things that much more exciting when we finally have our first molded product in hand.

Bunny-Tree:

Our logo is actually an inside joke between my girlfriend and I. It was this silly little yogurt tube that had a game for kids on it where you mix matched faces. One of them was this incredibly derpy looking bunny and a tree that we combined. We had it on our fridge for months, long before Tempus™, and I never would have guessed that it was going to become the name of a company, let alone one that i created.

Here's a rough sketch of what i wanted it to look like, which my tattoo artist, Bradley Atherton (out of Toledo, OH) turned into a reality. The antlers of the Jackalope are actually inspired by a Tree on my parent's farm that i've always loved. It's been there for over a hundred years.

Closing statements:

I've been doing all of this on my own with the support of my girlfriend. Partially out of stubbornness, partially out of a challenge to myself just to see how far I could go, and to see how much i could learn along the way. I've taught myself so many skills over the last few months, and I'm finally ready to share our creation with the world

I quit my job to pursue this dream of mine, because it simply meant that much to me. Whether it will pay off or not, i don't know. The hand of fate will decide i suppose.

From here on out i'm going to need all of the help i can get. This has been a wild ride, and i'm not certain i'll even reach the point that I want to, but i can at least say that I tried, and I'll miss every shot that i don't take.

Just believe in yourself. It's hard to do, but it's really the only thing that works. It's hard to keep going, and it's easy to feel defeated, but dreams will never happen if you can't power through it, and I appreciate every last one of you who checked out this kickstarter, because you're all rockstars, and I won't be able to do any of this without your support.

Thank you for everything.

-Phil Frisch

Risks and challenges

The greatest risks and challenges come from wanting to get this product manufactured in Ohio, which is not entirely possible at this point in time. My dream is to have Tempus one day manufactured entirely here, but for now only case and instructions will be made here.

I've been a chemist specializing in quality control for the last 6 years, so making the jump to self publishing a card game has certainly been a jarring adjustment, but this is my dream. I've quit my full time job as a chemist to pursue it, and i've even tattooed this game's logo on my arm because it's that important to me.

One of the biggest risks is the decision to self publish and find my own manufacturers, but i've overcome these risks greatly by quoting out production costs with local companies in preparation for its success.
