LET'S MAKE IT - A Perfect Day
Ben Meisel, M.D., – pediatrician, social entrepreneur and musician – needs your help to bring uplifting and empowering music to kids living with significant medical conditions. Dr. Ben’s album A Perfect Day celebrates his awe-inspiring patients who live life to the fullest, no matter what comes. These patients choose to find perfection all around them despite their imperfect health circumstances.
Join our Community!
A Perfect Day has high hopes of rallying a community around a simple mission – BUILDING PLAY INTO HEALTH. Kickstarting the album helps spread the word. It also allows Dr. Ben to team up with pioneering organizations working tirelessly to enable kids with serious medical conditions to be kids. Funds raised above the $15,000 needed to produce the album will go toward further development of creative projects that support kids and their families.
Kids and Music That Stand Out
A Perfect Day isn’t your typical children’s music album – and we think that’s a good thing. It means the album stands out. The music offers a rich mix of jazz, funk and rock’n roll. The dozen (or so) songs defy singular classification and appeal to every age group (even grown ups will like this music). Dr. Ben wrote numerous songs and chose others that capture the deep connections and raucously fun spirit of summer camp.
Serious medical conditions disrupt the lives of thousands and thousands of kids and their families. The typical things one does growing up often seem out of reach. Going to camp represents a perfect example. Dr. Ben’s service at the SeriousFun Children's Network of camps and children's hospitals throughout California has shown him that giving kids experiences that allow them to “be kids” equals serious fun, significant health benefits and overall a transformed outlook. The music of A Perfect Day aims to enable kids to draw upon camp’s psychosocial benefits (e.g., positive coping strategies and decreased illness-related stress). The larger mission of A Perfect Day remains to build kids up, help them create a connecting point for shared experiences and to foster a growing community that supports kids and their families.
Introducing Dr. Ben and His Vision to Build Play Into Health
Dr. Ben has put his heart and soul into A Perfect Day. He’s seen how music can transform kids’ spirits. He knows from extensive personal experience that music does a body good. Dr. Ben put his combined medical and musical talents to work as the chief medical advisor and medical director of The Painted Turtle (California’s SeriousFun Children’s Network medical camp created by actors Paul Newman and Page Adler) from 2006 to 2010. He launched Dr. Ben & Co. in 2013 with a simple idea to build play into health. As a social entrepreneur, he sees tremendous possibilities for patient-empowering music, educational gaming and health entertainment that enable children, teens and families to LIVE WELL despite serious medical conditions.

Risks and challenges
Dr. Ben, the other musicians contributing their talents, the fine artists and professionals donating time and energy to produce and launch A Perfect Day have invested their hearts and donated expertise that would amount to thousands of dollars. With this generous in-kind support, our shoestring production budget – carefully calculated at $15,000 – allows us to achieve the highest quality and sound to uplift the kids and teens listening to the album.
As with all projects, certain hurdles or bumps in the road could occur. I am a practicing pediatrician, which means my schedule can at times be a bit unpredictable. I also happen to be married to an internist, who graciously allows me to pursue my musical pursuits while we juggle parenthood of our two young daughters. I’m committed to working every available minute I have (without neglecting my family and patient commitments, of course) to keep the album on the right course. We’ve set an ambitious production timeline to complete the album by this fall. That means should “life happen” we may have to slightly adjust our timeline. Regardless, with your help, we’ll make it. We’re committed to finalizing and distributing A Perfect Day in 2014.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
