About this project
Here I Go is a performance work portraying a sixty-something widow and Dolly Parton fan who whips up a banana pudding and
contemplates suicide in a compelling new play conceived and
directed by Luke Leonard and made by Monk Parrots (a New York nonprofit theatre company), with a libretto-text by David Todd.
In 2011, director Luke Leonard and playwright David Todd began discussing ideas for a new text and performance structure, which led to a three week rehearsal period supported by The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space Artist Residency. The first public presentation of Here I Go was at Dixon Place in New York on June 23, 2011. More recently, Here I Go marked Monk Parrots' Off-Broadway debut at 59E59 Theaters from May 22 - June 3, 2012.
The next step for Monk Parrots is our EUROPEAN DEBUT. We have been invited to present Here I Go as one of ten artist-in-residence groups at the 2012 LA MAMA SPOLETO OPEN in Spoleto, Italy. The show will be performed on 8/29, 8/30, and 8/31.
Presenting and touring theatre is expensive, yet undeterred by limited capital our cast agreed to pay for their own airfare. Plane tickets are purchased and we will be in Spoleto in August! Unfortunately, additional funds are required to offset the expenses associated with lodging, local transportation, and shipping.
The festival will provide accommodations and food for six of our company members (five cast members plus director), but we must cover the expenses incurred by additional travelers (Associate Director and two designers/technicians...roughly $1350). We will stay outside of Spoleto in Bazzano and do not have transportation to and from the city, so we must rent a van (approximately $1100, plus gas). Additional funds raised will be applied to shipping costs for scenic elements, train fare to and from Rome, and any unforeseen expenditures.
International exposure and collaboration is at the core of our mission, so the invitation to present Here I Go at the 2012 La MaMa Spoleto Open in Italy is one we cannot miss. Please help us bring our American play to Italian audiences in the context of an international festival where we are sure to initiate alliances for future cross-cultural exchanges.
