About this project

So, we got the first issue out and in the shops all on our own.

We tell a lie. It'd have been nothing without those folk submitting the brilliant, twisted words and visual bit and bobs that got shops and punters interested in The Alarmist in the first place.

We hadn't really realised the scale of the talent out there. This talent should be rewarded, but at present, as two close-to-broke northern lads not breaking even and with no Daddy's Amex to fall back on, we can't do this.

We'd very much like to, though, and with your help we might just be able to pull this great 'appropriate payment for art' thing off...

So how much are we talking about, Einstein?

Well, we intend to pay artists and writers a fair payment for their work and what we mean by that is:

  • Each illustrator or artist will receive £50 per art piece/per page their art is featured.
  • Writers of short poems (under 150 words or 10 lines or less) will receive £30.
  • Writers of longer poetry (150 words or more, or over 10 lines) we will pay the writer a minimum of £35 or 10p per word with a maximum payment of £75.

  • Writers of essays, prose or short stories of under 500 words will receive a minimum payment of £35 or 15p per word with a maximum payment of £50.

  • Writers of essays, prose or short stories of 500 words or over will receive a minimum payment of £60 or 10p per word with a maximum payment of £100.

  • We also intend to pay our graphic designer £250. He worked for free on our first issue as a labour of love but it's not fair that he should have do that for the second issue, especially as we nearly drove him to insanity with our constant requests & nagging and, more importantly, because of the fact that his work is absolutely superb.

FAQ

What about any extra money raised?

All additional money raised will be used to cover the almost crippling printing costs of publishing a bloody gorgeous magazine and to cover the burdensome shipping costs. Any surplus money beyond that will be used to pay all our contributors for Issue 3 and further.

My Paul says hot milk brings out the wheaty taste

That's not actually a question

My Paul says hot milk brings out the wheaty taste?

That's just raising the intonation of a statement which we have nothing to say about.

Why should I give my hard earned cash for this?

On top of receiving something rather smashing from our pledges, you also can take a great deal of warmth in the fact that you'll be part of something which really means something to the people who are rewarded.

Will I get updates or information about what the contributors think about a successfully funded bid?

We'll be delighted to update you with details of what your money has gone into and the feedback we receive. We're not anticipating any negativity but we won't skirt over it if it means that feedback can help us improve for the future. We hope you'll be with us on that journey although if we keep using clichéd nonsense like that then you'll probably need to bring sick bags.

Risks and challenges

Printing's expensive.

In terms of print quality and specifics, it is very high quality. The first issue was A4, four colour process lithographic print, with additional gold pantone on front & back cover and spine. The main body is 120 GSM uncoated and the cover is a 300GSM matt laminated wood free silk.

As you might expect, this also means that postage is expensive. Promoting the thing is expensive. And time is expensive.

But with one issue out and proud, we'd hope we've demonstrated the fortitude to get things rolling and crack on, bigger, better, odd as ever, and read by more of our beloved weirdos out there.
