Update #21

Release Date: Launch Imminent!

Hello again backers and welcome to one of the very last project updates for Expeditions: Conquistador.  The long awaited and speculated release is finally at hand, and we are very eager to deliver our release build to you all, but first, the update news:

What?

The full version of the game Expeditions: Conquistador, this very Kickstarter project is on the last leg of its amazing journey! But some of you may not know that we did a fair bit more than we promised for this game in our original goals here on KS, so you are in for an even grander gaming experience than you might be expecting!

For starters we achieved our first two stretch goals, even though we didn’t reach the stretch pledge numbers. So every time a player promotes one of their expedition members they can select from 30+ passive abilities to boost the unit in combat. Our second stretch goal also was reached, we created greater variations in character models, and further boosted the quality of the character animations as well.

We also implemented two concepts that came out of KS Backer suggestions: the Player Fortress-- which you as the player can capture and improve, and the detailed camping system which also includes ‘tinkering’ a skill in which the unit can build equipment or research expeditionary improvements.

We also implemented something that we really wanted to do as well, a Multi-player skirmish mode. And while we got some negative feedback for it, if you enjoy the game, and enjoy the combat, you will most likely also enjoy the PvP. It is available in two modes oldschool Hot-seat (taking turns on the same computer, like back in the days before the internet), and TCP/IP which will allow you to play with a friend on a different computer, whether you are on Windows, Mac, or Linux system.

It has been a long and exciting road, we want to thank you for being such helpful and supportive backers, it is with your shared thoughts and feedback that we’ve been able to complete this project. Expeditions: Conquistador is something we are very proud of and we hope you enjoy it.

Where?

Expeditions: Conquistador will be available on all of the distribution channels we asked you to choose from earlier in the project, that includes GoG, Desura, and GamersGate but we are also pleased to announce that leaving Steam Greenlight and partnering with bitComposer has got us now on Steam as well. While hints have been made to that end throughout various discussionary forums around the web (including here), we wanted to wait until we had the SDK in our hands before we started getting too excited. The good news is that our preliminary work with it has taken quite nicely to our code and we’re ready to announce a release date.

But before that, Steam is decidedly not DRM-free and that may not matter to some of you but it does matter to others, so we are offering a Steam key to each of you our backers who pledged 15 dollars and up on top of the GoG, Desura, or GamersGate option you selected in the Backers Survey. If you would like a Steam key simply private message us using your kickstarter account with tagline ‘Steam ID’, send us your actual steamID in that message, and we will send a key directly to the Steam account you message to us once the keys are generated. This should prevent any of you who want a Steam version but don’t want to publicly lose your anti-DRM street cred. here on Kickstarter from being found out-- if that type of thing is of particular importance to you. To be double clear, you will be getting a DRM-free key to one of these three sites: GoG, Desura, and GamersGate, and if you want a Steam key write to us, we will send you one of those as well.

Back to more news, bitComposer is doing more than just putting us on Steam, they have also offered to help with regionalizing and distribution in Russia (and perhaps Germany if all goes well), this is terrific news for us all as we don’t have the manpower or resources ourselves to do a proper Russian or German translation. We also have provided a tool for users to play with their own translations if they want to (some people requested this feature), the readme file explaining the process is included in the game build.

When?

The long awaited release date: May 30, 2013 (Which is before the end of Q2 by a whole month!). Once the game is up on the various distribution sites we will be able to generate the redeem codes for each of you based on the platform you chose already in the survey.

In Other News:

Unity version 4.1.2F1 which is the most current version of Unity has a problem with their application_quit function. It is the function designed by Unity to end their applications(in our case the game). We are not the only devs who have experienced this new issue when we upgraded to the latest version but apparently it will be fixed in an upcoming patch by the folks over at Unity, when that new patch comes in we will update the game files on the distribution channels. While this does not affect any part of actually loading or playing Expeditions: Conquistador, we thought we should give you all the head’s up so you understand why you may get an error whenever you quit the game. While we considered waiting with the release until this bug is resolved we think that you all have waited long enough.

Here is a link to the Unity Forums where it is being discussed should you be interested: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/174002-Unity-4-1-Game-exe-has-stopped-working-after-Application-Quit()

Official Website

Some of you backers were concerned about the official Website for Expeditions: Conquistador, it is now up and available in all of its shining glory! (www.conquistadorthegame.com).

Rewards

While the game itself is one of our most important rewards, it is not the only one. Some of you may be wondering about the other pledge rewards. We will start to roll-out the other rewards (anything that is not a digital copy/redeem key for the game) as we receive the components which make up each of the Pledge packages. We have already received the posters and t-shirts and when your Rewards package meets the criteria (when the box is full of goodies) it will be out the door and on its way to you! you will receive a confirmation update via kickstarter from us when the packages are out the door.

We are delivering our first Kickstarter Reward today, the Special Thanks to all of you Kickstarter Backers on the Expeditions: Conquistador website you can check it out here.  The thanks are accessible at the bottom of every page on the site (http://conquistadorthegame.com/credits/).

Thanks again for all of your support, questions, comments and feedback.

Wha do people always debate DRM when they are talking about Steam? The real issue with Steam is that you don't own a game you pay for. You only get a "subscription" to a game. And the moment your Steam account is cancelled for any reason you lose all your subscriptions. And then it doesn't matter if there is DRM on a game or not---you cannot legally use it anymore anyhow.
Oh, did I mention that Valve has the right to cancel your account without having to have a provable reason?

Very mature. And wrong. Games don't need Steam to run perse.

"...This should prevent any of you who want a Steam version but don’t want to publicly lose your anti-DRM street cred. here on Kickstarter from being found out..."
This gave me a chuckle (perhaps a KS t-shirt project "Steam user and embarrassed about it" is on the cards?). Good to see a choice being offered though and to hear that Russian speakers will be able to colonise the US their own way! :)

Regarding Steam's DRM - I have seen games which basically use it as an installer, but where you can still copy the game folder somewhere else and launch the game from the executable without needing Steam to be running, even in offline mode. Admittedly these are mostly older titles which don't make much use of the Steam overlay stuff...

      http://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_drmfree_games_on_steam/page1

Also I suppose having to use Steam to download the files in the first place counts as 'online activation' if you're a real stickler.

Ah, in my exitement I forgot to add that I'd like to recieve a Steam-key as well. This game is certainly worthy to be a part of my library there. Once again, great news Logic Artists!

Awesome news, good to see the previous drama is nothing but a memory and you guys managed to make good use of the extra time, those stretch goals were really good and I was disappointed only the main one or so got reached, but it's great we got em.

I still think however that pending positive sales, that the extra Inca campaign should be made as an expansion.

As a big fan of Steam I am going to publically state that I'm requesting a Steam key, too. ;) While it's not DRM-free, I believe they're some of the only people who have done DRM "right" by making it a system that adds value as well, rather than merely subtracting it.

(Though to be fair if it wasn't absolutely lousy I'd also like uPlay - I really like the idea of being able to earn points by playing games and redeeming them for various unlockables, it reminds me of the really nice Steam summer and winter sales, but uPlay's negatives still outweigh its positives a lot.)

Of course I will also be sending a private message.

Also, I suppose we can use Steam to murder each other in Expedition if we ever so desire :)

Creator Daniel Magnan on May 10, 2013

@Bob, you will get both a Steam and a GOG copy if you want. If GOG is what you answered in the survey, then that is what you are getting. If you contact them about a steam key, you will get that as well. At least that is how I understood the update.

I'm another who likes both Steam and GOG so thanks for the opportunity to choose either. I chose GOG on the survey and I'm happy with that. Congratulations to Logic Artists and the guys who went the extra yards in testing. I tested the game but you guys (you know who you are) went above and beyond.

There is a way for developers to opt-out of Steam's DRM per se, yes, although you'd have to ask Valve about how to do that. But regardless of that, for people like me, Steam is not an option in either case, since I do not agree with their terms of service (reserved rights to install third-party software and instantly remove access to all your games for doing something wrong on their forums? Heck no!), not to mention that you still need to use the Steam client to download the game in the first place, and you don't get a stand-alone installer.

    16. Untitled-1_9f99.small

Creator TheChosenOne on May 10, 2013

No I'm not. Steam can be DRM free. Nothing to do with offline mode. Just depends on the game. Most games don't use it.

@Hoder Don't get me wrong, Steam is convenient and I have a lot of games on it, although I prefer GOG for being truly drm-free. Just keep in mind that the 1 week only applies if you prepare before going into offline mode. If you are in online mode and your suddenly lose your internet connection for some reason, offline mode may or may not work.

Awesome news guys, I really wanted this on Steam, as I use Steam for 99% of my PC gaming and have no problem logging into Steam once a week....
Great you are giving people the option to choose what they want

    21. Ddmagnan.small

Creator Daniel Magnan on May 10, 2013

@Logic Artists He is probably referring to "offline mode" for Steam as being drm free. However that is not correct. While offline mode does let you play for a while without an internet connection, after a week or so of being offline it stops working until you sign back into Steam again. I've had problems with it and I know a lot of people in the military that are often without an internet connection for long periods of time have problems with it as well. I don't know why they don't allow offline mode to work forever, registering your Steam key should be enough to prove you own the game legally.

We're supposed to use the kickstarter "contact me" on this page to ask for the steam key? I just wanted to be sure because there is no tagline or subject header with this messaging system. I actually like using steam, I sometimes forget I have games that aren't attached to my Steam. Thanks for the bonuses! Looking forward to playing this.

Congratulations! I'm not only excited to play the game, but also genuinely relieved that you're acquitting yourselves so well (insofar as delivering more than you promised in a somewhat timely manner).

Fair or not, a lot of us with limited income are bound to judge crowdfunding-as-a-concept based on the results of each of our first few backed projects. By delivering, Logic Artists is 'paying it forward' by demonstrating Kickstarter's potential. Kudos!

@TheChosenOne, Alex @Logic Artists here responding to you, you have already completed the Survey, we have your name (first initial and last name) and address and tshirt size, among other things. You also responded on the survey by selecting GoG.

We have decided on this method of distribution for Steam, it is opt-in, it's only for backers that decide they want it so please follow our directions if you would like a Steam key and we will be very glad to send you one. I'm not sure how to make Steam games DRM free, but whether that is possible or not, Expeditions: Conquistador will not be DRM free on steam. Thanks for the post!
