Expeditions: Conquistador 2nd Kickstarter Beta Released
Buenos dias, esteemed Kickstarter backers. Once more we intrude upon your inbox in order to update you on our progress on Expeditions: Conquistador.
We have finally found the time to apply a quick round of polish and upload a new version of the Kickstarter beta build for those of you who pledged $30 or more – you'll receive a link shortly in a separate message. It's still only the first campaign – the Aztec campaign will not be released for public testing, so you'll have to wait until the final release to play that, but rest assured we've been working on it for a while already.
On the plus side, owing to the recent release of Unity 4, we're putting out a Linux version this time as well! We're really excited to see if that version... well… works. Unity's Linux support is still in beta, so you'll probably experience some visual glitches and some performance issues. Rest assured we'll do everything we can to weed that out before the final release, and any feedback you can give us in the meantime will be greatly appreciated.
This beta not only incorporates fixes for the bugs you guys reported in the first version, but also several new things, many of them implemented specifically based on your feedback and your suggestions. You'll find the new camping system in there – which includes a crafting system – a bunch more random events, and even some new combat soundtracks (more ambient music to follow later).
You'll also remember that though our pledges fell just short of our first stretch goal, we promised we'd try to get passive abilities into the game anyway. It's our great pleasure to inform you that we have managed this, and those of you with beta access will be able to try it out for yourselves if you download the beta and promote any of your followers.
We're really happy with how it turned out, and just as you guys said, it adds a bit more tactical depth when you know that certain followers have small advantages in certain situations. We'll soon be adding an information screen as well that you can use during a battle to remember which passive abilities a certain follower has, but for now you'll just have to remember it yourself (or write it down on a piece of paper!)
Weapon proficiencies have also been implemented as passive abilities, but they aren't yet finished, so they've been deactivated in the beta. In the final version, you'll be able to eg. give some of your scholars the ability to fight with a halberd if you so choose (in fact I would encourage it, because it would be ridiculous).
One of the things we did with our Kickstarter funding was to hire an animator to work with us full-time in the office. He's made great progress already, but it's still a bit too early to implement all his animations, meaning the beta will still contain the old animations. We'll try to put together a demo reel of some of his cooler work soon, so you can see how fluid and physical the animations are going to be in the final game.
As always, we invite you to sign up for our own forums and let us know if you've pledged to our Kickstarter (including your Kickstarter e-mail address so we can verify who you are) and we'll give you access to the backers only forum. We're always happy to get your thoughts and opinions on the game, and any suggestions you might have for improvement. We'd particularly like to hear how the game looks and runs if you're playing the Mac or Linux build, as we haven't had the chance to test either of these versions as thoroughly as we'd like.
We hope you'll enjoy the new beta!
