Hey everybody! Welcome to my Kickstarter campaign called Subconscious: Sketches from a Dark Place. My name is Bobby Rebholz and I want to take the time and thank all of you who are making this possible. Please feel free to visit my website and check out some of my work at bobbyrebholz.blogspot.com

Teaching is something that I fell into unexpectedly and have grown to love it. For four years, I was a full time drawing instructor in the college of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning at the University of Cincinnati. I currently teach visual arts at the Co-Op Arts & Humanities Magnet High School in New Haven, CT. When I am not working on freelance projects for games and television such as the show Face Off on the SyFy channel, I am constantly drawing and learning new techniques to better my art.
I have been planning to make a book of my sketches for quite some time. With the fantastic quality and trusted work from previous Kickstarter-funded books, Kraken Print can deliver an art book that will be made with the utmost professionalism and polish.
- A beautiful, 120 page hard-bound book full of sketches and process.
- Portfolio reviews
- Live sketch sessions with Q & A
- Awesome quality prints
- By pledging, we will mention your name in the credits as a vital part of the funding process. The credits will be displayed at the back of the book and you will all be thanked for your continued support.
- A two-month mentorship on drawing techniques
Because you all are awesome, the following posters Morphed and Ancient, will be added to all existing tiers starting from Basic and on. This is in addition to the already promised 2 and 3 additional prints that the upper level tiers promise! Enjoy!
This book is a collection of eerie places and settings, nasty creatures, mystical warriors, vicious entities, and themes only a dark imagination can give. So what is this "Dark Place" that I'm referring to? The theme of this book is dark fantasy. Think Dark Crystal or Labyrinth. Movies such as Predator, Aliens, and An American Werewolf in London have played a huge part in my drawings since I was a child. The art will dip into the nightmarish and the eerie without being too much.
But what will the art look like? While taking out my trusty pencils and moleskine sketchbook, I might morph my twisted thoughts into something..
What will a downloadable tutorial be like?
Tutorial videos planned...
1. Thumbnail sketches and working from them to a final, presentable sketch. (Concept art & Industrial design)
2. Value (Shading)
3. Anatomy (Human and animal)
4. Creature sketches and how to start using basic shapes within thumbnails.
5. Basic shapes (Cube, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere)
This video sample does not reflect the actual length of time all tutorials will be. Tutorials will vary in time length depending on examples and explanations needed.
The decision of setting the funding goal at $9,000 was an important one. I looked at quite a few book campaigns and the majority pledged between $5-10,000. After getting quotes from multiple printing companies, printing just 100 hard back books can be $3,500 and more. Printing 1000 books will run at $5,000+ . I have heard horror stories involving costs that campaign creators did not prepare for ahead of time.
Kickstarter will take a 5% fee after funding as well as a 5% credit card processing fee. There are other costs such as overseas shipping that can be $25 per order in some countries. Then, I will also have prints of drawings being shipped with every tier that require individual shipping materials. In addition with any Kickstarter, there are also unforeseen costs such as damaged shipments.
Risks and challenges
There are definitely risks and challenges involved in projects like this. This is my first time doing a Kickstarter by myself but I will make sure everybody is happy and gets what they paid for. I draw for a living and devote hours every day to it. I want to give you all a reason to back me. All of the artwork for the book is complete. This will allow me to devote more time in drawing for the reward tiers and planning tutorial videos for the higher tiers!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
