Alien Empires: Illustrated Playing Cards
Alien Empires is a digitally illustrated art deck designed by Dan Feldmeier and will be printed by the USPCC.
As a child I grew up loving all things, superhero, sci-fi and fantasy related be they comic books, cartoons, or movies. Did it have a picture of an alien on the VHS cover? I wanted to watch it. A dragon? Yep, I needed to read it. A mask clad toy battling evil-doers? Oh yeah, I had to play with it. To this day I'm still a fan of cape wearing superheroes, grey bearded wizards, monstrous orcs, and sword-wielding barbarians, but alien life forms have a greater pull on me.
Over the years, I would paint and draw aliens and superheroes of all types, but found myself leaning more toward the extraterrestrial, especially as I got older. As my skill improved, aliens have become my go to, especially when I find myself in with an artist block; drawing unknown creatures from far off worlds always seem to knock down that same block, as if a form of catharsis for me.
A few years back I discovered it was possible to get custom playing cards created. With this knowledge I became inspired to dive deeper into my alien creations, wanting to create not only a deck full of awesome artwork, but one with its own universe. Over the last couple of years I have been inching my way towards this dream and found the vision through inspirational artists whom I admired and whom helped guide me towards my goal.
Alien Empires is the fruition of a love of all things alien, many, many years of dreams, and many more years of honing a craft I love.
I would like to say thank you for those who choose to back my campaign as well as those who have taken time out of their day to share this project with their friends and family, it is truly appreciated.
Alien Empires is a digitally illustrated, 54-card poker deck, featuring a variety of alien races throughout an unknown galaxy. I'm planning to get the cards printed through USPCC on their standard card stock.
Drawing inspiration from my many years of visually ingesting all forms of science fiction media, I’ve crafted unique aliens for each of the court cards and jokers, all of whom have their own back story (which can be found within the art book). I've chosen to go with a clean, smooth look to the number cards in order to both ensure quick, easy readability as well as showcase the pips created specifically for this deck of cards.
A lone entity, a fabricator and designer, began an experiment billions of years ago. Life was established upon sixteen planets, four unique planets in each of the four solar systems. The suits represent each solar system and the court cards represent the dominant species on the 16 planets.
The stories behind these alien life forms are detailed in the comic book sized, 40 page art book. It provides a window into the Founder and the aliens it is responsible for creating, as well as how aliens came to be the incarnation seen on each card.
By clicking "Support this project", you will not only help make the Alien Empires a reality, thus bringing my aliens to life, but you'll be getting yourself a most excellent reward (or two...or more)!
Below are the awesome rewards available to choose!
So you're probably asking yourself "Where's my money going if I back this?" Solid question to ask. The majority of the money will go toward the production of the cards, art books, and other rewards (though mostly the card production) as well as shipping costs to get everyone they're groovy rewards, plus that lovely thing we call taxes.
Once the Kickstarter is funded and completed, the artwork will be sent off to be approved and printed, which may take up to 2-3 months (and is something that will be unfortunately out of my control). Once the cards are printed and delivered to me, my main priority will be ensuring the rewards for my most excellent backers are received as promptly as possible.
Risks and challenges
All the artwork for this deck has been completed; the only challenges, beyond the unforeseen, lie with ensuring the product gets printed with the utmost quality, as well as ensuring everything is shipped out to all the amazing people who backed this campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
