Ergon Training is a system dedicated to your success with the Concept2 Ergs - Bike, Row and Ski. We educate you about the machines and proper technique, provide structured workouts that keep you focused, and set motivational goals that are challenging and attainable.
Based in Vermont, we are a part of a global community of rowers, skiers, and bikers that use the Ergs to help improve their fitness, indoors and out. We are here to support new erg owners as well as elite athletes, and everyone in between.
EDUCATION: Ergon delivers high quality coaching services ... what we call "Ergucation"
New erg users want to learn how to use their machines safely and effectively. Currently they need to scour the web for instructional videos, which are out there, but come in various levels of quality, length, and efficacy. Ergon takes that pain away by compiling a library of succinct, high-quality videos teaching new users to row, ski or bike with great technique. Each time the Ergon athlete sits down they have instant access to that instructional content delivered to them conveniently through the app. As users gain experience, their learning needs grow more technical, so that same library hosts drills, advanced techniques, and dig into the more finer points of technique development.
And when those athletes have that question of "am I doing this right?" we have the perfect answer. Our Micro-Coaching system will allow them to record their technique, submit it to our coaches who can provide concise video analysis, and receive feedback and guidance on how to improve their form. Micro-Coaching is an a-la-cart service accessed and paid for directly within the Ergon app interface.
STRUCTURE: Ergon delivers programming in the form of daily workouts
We have spent the last 9 years programming fitness-focused workouts for thousands of athletes in two CrossFit gym locations. Our Rowing program is renown as a leader in the business and our Ergon Row/Bike/Ski classes have been a hit ever since we began them. This experience of developing effective, challenging and engaging workouts will be delivered via the Ergon app as a daily feed. Each time an athlete uses their erg they will have the structure of the workout pre-designed for them, eliminating the question of "What should I do today." Ergon can deliver all types of workouts, matching the programming with the user's goals, and we can even connect third party coaches with their clients.
MOTIVATION: Ergon delivers pacing targets for every workout
Nothing is more thrilling than a good chase. We thrive when there is a specific goal to be achieved, and we languish when there is nothing in particular to accomplish in our workout - besides just getting to the end. The Ergon Training System delivers that goal-based workout each and every time, priming our athletes to chase, catch and conquer. We evaluate each user with a single workout, and then use the power of decades of exercise science research to convert those workout results into valuable information that hides behind the scenes within the Ergon app. Once an athlete chooses their workout for the day, Ergon crunches their past performance numbers and offers very specific pacing targets. These targets are highly motivating, and as each interval ticks by with those goals achieved, the athlete can't help but find satisfaction from their hard work, and grow more confident in their abilities. And as that confidence leads to improvements, Ergon grows those goals alongside of them, making sure that each workout keeps moving them in the right direction.
Now that you have the top level view of Ergon, let's dig a little deeper. The app itself is an extension of the existing monitor that ships with every Concept2 machine, the RowERG, BikeERG and SkiERG. That monitor, called a PM5, does a terrific job of reading and displaying data from the athlete and showing it in a rudimentary fashion. It also allows you to program workouts into the machine and can save the results of those workouts to memory, all with basic sequences of button pushes.
Concept2 has developed an app called ErgData that also facilitates the transfer of completed workouts to their own proprietary online database, called the Logbook. Aside from this, ErgData will display the same data that is shown on the PM5 via a Bluetooth or wired connection, making it more of a second view of the same information the PM5 is already displaying.
Ergon looks to take this basic functionality into the present day. We live in world where connectivity, interactivity and engagement are all expected in every one of our technology experiences. By using the phones and tablets of existing and new Concept2 customers we can bring their Ergs to life in rich, interesting and challenging ways. Our cross-platform app will also connect to the user's PM5 with Bluetooth, but from there we look to replace the button pushing interface of their monitor with the smooth, intuitive touch-screen experience a device can offer.
There will be a free version of Ergon, with an upgrade to the full version via an in-app subscription. The free version of Ergon will offer the improved interface with the PM5, educational videos that teach athletes to make better use of their machines, and some sample workouts for them to test out. After completing their first workout we will apply our Ergon Training System formulas to their subsequent workouts so they can get a feel for the motivation provided when you have specific goals to chase.
The paid version of Ergon will then deliver daily workouts to their app, which can be instantly loaded and performed without any button pushing of the PM5. These workouts are professionally programmed by coaches with years of experience, and each one gets customized for the specific athlete through the Ergon Training System. This system knows where to start setting attainable goals, and recognizes when those goals are exceeded so the app can adjust as the athlete improves their skills and fitness.
And this is just the start. Once version 1.0 of Ergon is released we have a whole host of opportunities ahead to use the computing power and connectivity of user's devices to bring their experience with their ergs into the place where home and gym fitness machines are already starting to head.

Co-Founder: Nick Petterssen
Nick has pursued a lifetime of scholastic sports, a collegiate and professional career in volleyball, and a long stint as an endurance athlete competing in Nordic skiing, running, triathlon and cycling. His specialty is a lack of specialization, having trained at a high level in a lot of different arenas of sport. Nick and his wife Cady currently own and operate two CrossFit affiliates in Vermont with about 400 members combined. Cady was a collegiate rower at UCONN, works at Concept2, and claims to have taught Nick everything he knows about the RowErg.
Prior to getting into the fitness business, Nick worked for 10 years at a start-up software company as a product designer. That experience, along with his decades of training and coaching have made Ergon his primary passion as the two worlds of accessible technology and fitness collide. This project will fulfill his lifetime goal of bringing the science-based world of elite training to those seeking "regular" fitness and better quality of life.
Co-Founder: Jay Ericson
Jay has always sought out new challenges on the athletic field, in the mountains, and in his photography studio. He played soccer, lacrosse and ultimate in college, and his junior year ran his first marathon. After college, he worked as a professional mountain and fly fishing guide in Yosemite for nearly ten years. In that time he hiked the John Muir Trail 5 times, taught himself photography with the Sierra Nevada’s as his backdrop, and began publishing his work. After a stint in Montana where he shot for a local newspaper, taught photojournalism at the University and completed his Masters degree, he moved to Vermont where he now lives with his wife and their three boys.
After leading the marketing and communications offices at two prominent Vermont Universities, Jay returned to his passion as a photographer and re-established his freelance business in 2017. Throughout the years he has continued to embrace endurance sports by both running and rowing marathons, and through CrossFit has found a love for the “chipper” wods and all things Erg. His work with Ergon is a synthesis of his passion for a creative challenge, a solid appreciation for how the app can help an elite athlete stay at the top of their game, and keep a middle-aged father of three in the game.

The money we raise through this campaign will be utilized to bring one of our part time developers on board in a full time capacity. This move will allow us to see the project across the finish line by September 2019. Your contribution brings Ergon one step closer to existence, and we thank you for sharing in our idea with us.
Risks and challenges
As a small company our biggest challenge is getting the buzz to spread about Ergon at launch time. Fortunately, we know the Concept2 community inside and out, and they are fairly tight community. We anticipate a high level of success in communicating the right message in the right places, and as the only app that communicates and works with all three of the Concept2 Ergs we have a unique offering.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
