I'm willing to pretend that the prospect of acting doesn't terrify me in order to help Michael Reaves make his film- Neil Gaiman
Can't wait to see....feel the blood kiss. - Whoopie Goldberg
Michael Reaves is one of the most original writers I've met. His imagination is as boundless as his zeal for riveting storytelling. - David Brin
THESE PEOPLE BELIEVE IN MICHAEL'S DREAM AND WANT TO MAKE IT A REALITY.
A brilliant writer who can't talk is talking plenty loud - thanks to you.
When I finished Blood Kiss and gave it to my agent, he read it and in his first breath assured me that he liked it; then in his second assured me that he couldn't sell it. It seemed that, at the time, one couldn't throw a rock in this town without hitting a writer clutching a vampire script; the sparkly, twinkly romantic kind, of course. (And, to quote the Coen Brothers' brilliant script for Barton Fink: "Do me a favor; throw it hard.") it seemed that, even if I could place Blood Kiss at one of the studios, it would likely just sit on a shelf gathering more dust than Kharis the Mummy did while pining for Princess Ananka.
I couldn't stand the thought of that. All I needed was start-up capital.
But it's a funny thing about venture capitalists; none of them wants to put down the first money. They'll line up and stumble all over themselves to drop the second, third, fourth, etc. greenback on the barrelhead -- as long as someone else goes first. It's a game as old as Hollywood.
But there's a new game in town now. It's called "crowdfunding," and KickStarter and other sites like it give creative people a forum in which to present a project and ask for money to at least get it started -- and maybe do the whole shebang.
So that's why my movie isn't sitting in some producer's office somewhere, mixed in with others, its title an illegible scrawl of Magic Marker along its spine. Instead, it's getting made -- with your help, and many others like you.
For which I can only say, (or rather, type): "Thank you."
Okay, Now It's Time For YOUR Part!
The Bloody Rewards
I have Parkinson's Disease.
I can describe what PD is like. It's like being dipped in extremely slow-hardening cement. It's hard to get around much, unless I swallow a pharmacy's weight in pills every day. (Which aren't free, even with Medicare.) PD has also pretty much completely destroyed my ability to speak coherently. I can communicate sometimes, although most people aren't fluent in Village Idiot. And it's become nearly impossible to type anymore. I used to be able to type over 100 wpm; now I'm lucky if I can do ten.
The big problem is, I'm not done yet.
I want to see this movie made.
Where's the money going?
On screen. It's people working for the love of the project. 50k will get pre-production going and prove there's a demand for this project. 100k will cover our basic materials and rentals, plus technical people like location sound or digital compositors. About half will go to production and half to post-production. Things like real sets, digital sets, costumes, cameras and to feed the crew on 16 hour days. We may seek additional funding when we can show that YOU the fans want to see this.
Every dollar goes on the screen, most people won't draw a salary. WIth more funding we'll have more and better locations, including classic, real Hollywood locations. And we can get the film to you faster.

THERE'S NOTHING SUPERNATURAL ABOUT VAMPIRES.
MY VAMPIRES, THAT IS. IN BLOOD KISS, EVERYTHING'S EXPLAINED IN TERMS OF A SYMBIOTIC MICRO-ORGANISM THAT ALTERS THE VAMPS' MITOCHONDRIAL DNA. IT RENDERS THEM ALLERGIC TO SUNLIGHT AND SILVER, BUT THEY CAN STILL BE REFLECTED IN MIRRORS AND HAVE NO PARTICULAR AVERSION TO THE CROSS. (SOME MIGHT EVEN BELIEVE IN GOD.) THEY'RE MUCH STRONGER AND FASTER THAN HUMANS, AND PRACTICALLY IMMORTAL TO BOOT.
IN TERMS OF STORY, THERE'S SOMETHING VERY SEMINAL ABOUT THE WAY IT UNFOLDS. WITHOUT GOING INTO SPECIFICS, I THINK I CAN SAFELY SAY THAT IT HITS ALL THE TROPES OF BOTH THE DETECTIVE GENRE AND THE VAMPIRE GENRE, AND DOES SO IN A VERY ORGANIC WAY.
YOU WANT TO BRING PEOPLE TO THE MOVIE'S END WITH THE FEELING THAT IT COULDN'T HAVE ENDED ANY OHER WAY, THAT THE ENDING'S INEVITABILITY IS HIGHLY SATISFYING, AND YET THEY DIDN'T SEE IT COMING. IF YOU CAN DO THAT, YOU'VE CREATED GOLD.
Risks and challenges
What are the risks and challenges? Well, Neil could develop an aversion to daylight requiring we shoot only at night (Hey, just like his character!). Amber could get busy with writing a novel and we'd have to wait until it was finished. The locations could be demolished; this is LA. But we can overcome that with virtual sets. The cast has busy schedules, but we think we've found a time to accommodate everyone. Post production may take a while at a low budget, but with more funding we can deliver faster.
We've all made movies before and will bring our combined professionalism and skill to complete the movie. And we'll have insurance.
With respect to rewards fulfillment, we will be working with a professional fulfillment partner to get all your DVDs, digital downloads, and other goodies delivered safely and on schedule.
I’ll be sending regular updates about our progress to all backers, so you’ll be the first to know about what’s going on.
