About

REPLAN IT embodies the efforts of Jock Brandis, one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of appropriate technology, to inspire the citizens of nations worldwide to affect powerful social and economic change. Brandis has accomplished this by introducing sustainable machinery and engineering techniques specific to the diverse regions of the world, from an impoverished village in Malawi to a family farm in rural North Carolina. Be it irrigation, portable power or a simple schoolhouse desk and chair, the technology involves using low cost indigenous materials that are readily available. These devices are constructed, operated and maintained by the local communities with limited outside assistance.

Along with his international counterpart Illac Diaz, they will work with Design Against The Elements, a global architectural design contest supported by National Geographic to address several major issues of sustainable development. This team of experts will focus their efforts in the Philippines at the first sustainable school building constructed from plastic bottles and other recycled materials. Jock and Illac will quickly come to understand not only the limitations of the location but the potential unrealized opportunities waiting to be explored.

Keeping with the theme of sustainable design, Jock and Illac will consult with designers from Herman Miller, one of the world’s premier furniture designers, to create ergonomic work stations manufactured from recycled materials found anywhere in the world.

Next, Jock and Illac will harness the power of happy children as they assemble a water pumping system designed to operate solely from the energy created on a playground, energy generated from see-saws and merry-go-rounds, eliminating the need to move this vital resource using back-straining buckets.  Later, Jock will show the locals how to build a hand-washing station using an oil drum, old truck tire, concrete and bottles left over from the school building. This will provide not only a tool for keeping hands clean but will also provide an educational opportunity to teach the children how to combat disease and infection.

The solutions will amaze not just the local community but viewers as well.  This documentary program will serve as a catalyst to raise awareness about sustainable development through outreach programs around the globe. In addition to offering simple solutions for economic development, REPLAN IT is a call to action on developing nations to control their own destinies.
